This document specifies requirements and test methods common to all non-hinged hand instruments used in dentistry, including materials, hardness, surface finish, resistance to reprocessing and information for marking, although some can have additional specific requirements and test methods. This document does not specify terms and definitions or classification of specific types of hand instruments. This document excludes powered instruments. The classification and the shape of working ends of non-hinged hand instruments are excluded from this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4865-1:2023 - Dentistry: General requirements of hand instruments - Part 1: Non-hinged hand instruments specifies common requirements and test methods for rigid, non‑hinged dental hand instruments (e.g., explorers, scalers, curettes, spoons, spatulas, mirrors). The standard covers material selection, surface finish, dimensional checks, hardness reporting, resistance to reprocessing, mechanical strength (tensile and torque), and information for marking, labelling and packaging. It excludes powered instruments and does not define classification or the shapes of working ends.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & exclusions
- Applies to non‑hinged hand instruments only; powered instruments and working‑end shapes/classification are excluded.
- Materials
- Manufacturer chooses handle and working‑end materials provided performance requirements are met; stainless steel types referenced in ISO 21850-1 are examples.
- Surface finish & visual inspection
- Surfaces must be free of visible defects and production residues; inspection is performed at normal visual acuity (no magnification).
- Dimensions
- Measured with devices accurate to one‑tenth of the tolerance; manufacturers set overall length but note sterilization cassette containment limitations.
- Resistance to reprocessing
- Instruments intended for life‑long use shall withstand 100 reprocessing cycles (cleaning, disinfection, sterilization) per the manufacturer’s instructions and ISO 17664‑1/2 without deformation or corrosion, unless a lower validated cycle count is specified.
- Hardness
- Working‑part hardness must be stated in Vickers or Rockwell and tested per ISO 6507‑1 and ISO 6508‑1. Where no instrument‑specific standard exists, hardness shall be within ±5% of the manufacturer’s stated value.
- Mechanical strength
- Tensile strength and torque strength of the connection between working end and handle must meet values given in the respective instrument standard and be tested as specified (clauses 5.5, 5.6).
- Marking, labelling and packaging
- Required information and instructions for use must comply with applicable medical‑device information standards.
Practical applications & users
- Intended for:
- Dental device manufacturers (design, production, quality control)
- Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies
- Sterilization and reprocessing teams in dental clinics and central sterile services
- Standards committees and testing laboratories
- Benefits:
- Harmonizes testing and quality criteria across product families
- Supports validated reprocessing protocols and durable instrument design
- Improves traceability via consistent marking, labelling and instructions
