This document specifies methods for exposing plastic specimens to fluorescent UV lamp radiation, heat and water in apparatus designed to simulate the weathering effects that occur when plastic materials are exposed in actual end-use environments to global solar radiation, or to window-glass filtered solar radiation. Fluorescent UV lamp exposures for paints, varnishes and other coatings are described in ISO 16474-3.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4892-3:2024 - Plastics - Methods of exposure to laboratory light sources - Part 3: Fluorescent UV lamps specifies standardized methods for accelerated weathering of plastics using fluorescent UV lamps. The standard defines how to expose plastic specimens to UV radiation, heat and water in laboratory apparatus that simulate the effects of global solar radiation or window-glass filtered solar radiation. It replaces the 2016 edition and adds clarity on different chamber types and test cycles.
Keywords: ISO 4892-3:2024, fluorescent UV lamps, plastics weathering, accelerated weathering, laboratory light sources, UVA-340, UVA-351, UVB-313.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Simulate UV-driven ageing of plastic materials under controlled irradiance, temperature and wetting conditions. (Coatings/paints use ISO 16474-3.)
- Lamp types: Defines three lamp categories - UVA-340 (simulates global solar UV), UVA-351 (simulates window-glass filtered solar UV) and UVB-313 (emits shorter wavelengths; use only by agreement). Different lamp types must not be mixed.
- Apparatus and chambers: Specifies laboratory light sources, radiometers, specimen holders and two fundamentally different chamber types - condensation type and climatic chamber type (new Annex B and C guidance).
- Environmental control: Requirements for irradiance measurement and control, temperature regulation, humidity control, and wetting methods (condensation or water spray).
- Test conditions and cycles: Describes selection of irradiance level, UV/dark timing, wetting temperature and cycles, and alternative cycles (Annex D).
- Procedure and reporting: Guidance on specimen mounting, exposure, measurement of radiant exposure, determination of property changes and required test report information.
- Quality measures: Lamp ageing and maintenance, irradiance uniformity, use of control specimens, and caution against direct intercomparison between different apparatus types unless validated statistically.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Plastics manufacturers, material scientists, test laboratories, quality assurance teams, product designers and regulatory bodies involved in durability and lifetime prediction.
- Practical uses: Evaluate UV stability, compare formulations, validate UV stabilizers, qualify materials for outdoor applications, support product claims for colorfastness and mechanical retention, and help select materials for end-use environments (outdoor vs. window-exposed).
- Outputs: Standardized accelerated weathering data, reproducible test reports and comparative performance benchmarks for plastics exposed to UV radiation.
