Defines 15-pin connector and the assignment of connector pin numbers at the interface between data terminal equipment and data circuit-terminating equipment where CCITT Recommendations are considered.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4903:1989 specifies the 15‑pole (15‑pin) DTE/DCE interface connector and contact number assignments used at the interface between Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) and Data Circuit‑Terminating Equipment (DCE) where CCITT (now ITU‑T) Recommendations X.20, X.21 and X.22 apply. The standard defines the connector arrangement (male DTE / female DCE), essential mating dimensions, pin numbering and pairing, latching/locking provisions and guidance for shielding and interworking with related electrical characteristics (X.26, X.27, V.28).
Key Topics & Technical Requirements
- Connector geometry and contacts
- Illustrative figures for DTE (15 male contacts) and DCE (15 female contacts), plus male/female contact details and contact spacing.
- Essential dimensions shown to ensure intermateability with IEC Publication 807‑2 connector families.
- Pin assignments and pairing
- Contact numbering and circuit assignments tied to CCITT Recommendations (tables map functions like Transmit, Receive, Signal ground, timing).
- Paired contacts for multipair cable: e.g., 2 & 9, 3 & 10 … 8 & 15.
- Contact 1 reserved for shield connection; contact 15 reserved for future international use.
- Locking and mechanical details
- DCE connector uses two latching blocks with M3 threaded holes; DTE may use levers or screws to latch.
- Shielding
- Connector shielding is optional; if used both DTE and DCE housings should be metallic and provide a shield connection (contact 1).
- Interworking guidance
- Annexes provide finger‑clearance diagrams, recommended DCE spacing, and interconnect configurations for differing electrical characteristics (X.26/X.27/V.28).
- Annex C describes adapter arrangements to interwork X.20/X.26 DCE with V.28 DTE.
Applications & Who Uses It
- Hardware designers and mechanical engineers developing serial/modem interfaces and telecom equipment that must interoperate with public data networks.
- PCB and cable assembly manufacturers producing mating connectors, latching hardware and shielded interface cables.
- Systems integrators, test labs and procurement teams ensuring compliance and intermateability for DTE/DCE interfaces (e.g., synchronous/asynchronous terminal interfaces).
- Useful for legacy equipment maintenance, adapter design, and verification of pinouts/pairing in multi‑pair cabling.
Related Standards
- CCITT / ITU‑T Recommendations: X.20, X.21, X.22, X.26, X.27, and V.28 (electrical characteristics and interconnection rules).
- IEC Publication 807‑2 (rectangular connectors) and IEC vocabulary/definitions.
- ISO 2110 (25‑pole DTE/DCE connector) and ISO/IEC 4993 (connector housing dimensions, latching and shielding guidance).
- ISO 261 (metric screw threads) referenced for M3 thread specification.
