ISO 5-4:2009 specifies the geometric conditions for the definition of ISO 5 standard reflection density. It also recommends tolerances on geometric conditions that can be used in the design of instruments. The spectral conditions are specified in ISO 5-3. ISO 5-4:2009 also specifies the requirements for polarization (if that feature is included) and for backing material, and makes recommendations regarding accuracy and linearity. Although intended primarily for use in the measurement of the reflection characteristics of photographic and graphic arts materials, ISO 5-4:2009 is also applicable to the measurement of these characteristics for other materials.

ISO 5-4:2009 - "Photography and graphic technology - Density measurements - Part 4: Geometric conditions for reflection density" defines the geometric measurement conditions used to determine reflection density (reflectance-factor density) of photographic, print and other reflective materials. The standard specifies the ideal measurement geometry, practical tolerances for instrument design, requirements for polarization and backing material, and recommendations on accuracy and linearity. It is intended for densitometers and spectrophotometers used as densitometers.

- Annular influx (45°:0°) - annular illumination at θi = 45° and viewing at normal θr = 0°.

- Polarization and gloss suppression: Requirements and a numerical gloss suppression factor P are provided (see Annex D) for instruments with polarizing components.
- Backing material and standards for reference: Guidance on backing materials (Annex E) and requirements for certified reference materials and conformance testing (Annexes A, B, C).
