ISO 500-3:2004 specifies the dimensions of the master shield and clearance zones for rear-mounted power take-offs (PTO) of types 1 and 2, only, on narrow-track (track width 1 150 mm or less) agricultural tractors.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 500-2:2004 specifies dimensional requirements for the master shield and clearance zone around rear-mounted power take-offs (PTO) of types 1 and 2 fitted to narrow-track agricultural tractors (track width ≤ 1 150 mm). It is part of the ISO 500 series that defines PTO safety, geometry and interface dimensions for tractors. The standard supports safe PTO coupling, guarding and compatibility between tractors and driven implements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: applies only to rear-mounted PTO types 1 and 2 on narrow-track tractors (track width ≤ 1 150 mm).
- Tractor classification: defines type A (one axle track width ≤ 950 mm and PTO power < 20 kW) and type B (track width > 950 mm up to 1 150 mm).
- Geometric controls: specifies minimum and maximum aperture dimensions for the tractor master shield and the surrounding clearance zone to reduce entanglement risk. Example control values include a (min) = 76 mm, and minimum angles α ≥ 60°, β ≥ 50°, γ ≥ 45° (see Table 1 and Figure 1 in the standard for full dimensional data).
- PTO orientation and speed: requires PTO rotation clockwise when viewed from behind; nominal PTO rotational frequency may be achieved across one or more engine speed ranges.
- Guarding details: includes provision for a hole to couple a restraining member for the PTO drive shaft guard (prevents guard rotation) and notes when the master shield should be movable to facilitate coupling/uncoupling.
- Safety cross-references: safety and PTO-speed requirements are to follow ISO 500-1; towing-vehicle clearance interfaces follow ISO 5673-2, ISO 6489 series and ISO 24347.
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 500-2:2004:
- Tractor manufacturers and design engineers specifying rear PTO geometry for narrow-track machines.
- Implement and PTO shaft producers ensuring fit and safe coupling.
- Safety engineers, test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing compliance checks.
- Regulators and procurement teams specifying safety and interoperability requirements for agricultural fleets.
Practical benefits:
- Ensures consistent interface dimensions for safe PTO guarding and coupling.
- Reduces entanglement and mechanical interference risks for narrow-track tractor configurations.
- Facilitates compatibility between tractors and implements across manufacturers.
