Establishes rules for determining the loads, types and combinations of loads (main, additional and special loads) which must be taken into account when designing steel structures for mobile continuous bulk handling equipment. Is applicable to rail-mounted mobile equipment, especially to stackers, shiploaders, reclaimers, combined stackers and reclaimers and continuous ship unloaders (equipment fitted with bucket wheels or bucket chains). For other equipment, e.g. excavators, scrapers, reclaimers with scraper chain, mixed tyre or caterpillar-mounted stackers and reclaimers, the clauses as adapted to each type of apparatus are applicable.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 5049-1:1994 (Mobile equipment - steel-structure design)
ISO 5049-1:1994 sets out rules for determining the loads, load types and combinations that must be taken into account when designing steel structures for mobile continuous bulk‑handling equipment. It applies principally to rail‑mounted machines such as stackers, shiploaders, reclaimers, combined stacker/reclaimers and continuous ship unloaders (bucket‑wheel or bucket‑chain types). Clauses can be adapted for other mobile handling equipment (excavators, scraper systems, tyre or caterpillar‑mounted units).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Load classification: establishes three load groups - main loads (permanent/normal operating loads), additional loads (intermittent or operating‑condition loads) and special loads (rare events that must nevertheless be considered).
- Material and conveyor loads:
- Conveyor design capacities based on cross‑sectional area and speed; where fitted, automatic capacity limiters define the design load.
- Units with bucket wheels: a factor of 1.5 is referenced to account for additional filling (used as a minimum unless actual fill data are available).
- Provisions for incrustation/dirt accumulation (guidance values such as 10% on conveying devices or bucket‑chain ladders).
- Dynamic effects: includes permanent dynamic effects and inertia forces due to acceleration/braking; a dynamic load factor of 1.1 is cited for conveyor transport loads.
- Wind and environmental actions:
- Wind during handling: design wind speed vw = 20 m/s (unless otherwise specified).
- Aerodynamic pressure and resultant wind force calculation (P = A × q × c) with example q ≈ 0.25 kN/m² used as a handling condition; aerodynamic coefficient c depends on element geometry.
- Structural design and checks:
- General stress analysis, allowable stresses (yield‑based), buckling/compression checks, fatigue strength calculation and guidance for exceeding allowable stresses.
- Joint design: welded, bolted/riveted and HSFG bolts, plus cable considerations.
- Safety: rules for overturning and drifting checks; gangways and platforms to withstand 3 kN concentrated load and 0.3 kN horizontal railing load.
Applications - who uses ISO 5049-1
- Structural engineers and designers of mobile bulk‑handling equipment
- Manufacturers of stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders and continuous ship unloaders
- Engineering consultancies and OEMs preparing design specifications, mechanical/structural calculations and safety assessments
- Asset owners/operators verifying compliance, maintenance or refit design
