This document defines the Data Point Methodology for the creation of Data Point Models in the context of European supervisory reporting. Data Point Models are published by a European supervisory authority. To reflect the defined structures in a machine-readable form, they can be accompanied by an XBRL taxonomy. It is also possible to extend the described methodology to other environments.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5116-1:2021 - European data point methodology for supervisory reporting defines the Data Point Methodology used to create Data Point Models (DPMs) for European supervisory reporting. The standard formalizes a semantic, multidimensional metamodel that describes reporting metadata (facts, dimensions, members, rules) in a machine-readable way and supports publication with an XBRL taxonomy. While focused on European supervisory authorities, the methodology can be extended to other reporting and regulatory environments.
Key Topics
- Data Point metamodel: semantic and structural building blocks for DPMs (DataPointModel, PublicElement, DictionaryElement, Framework, Table, TableGroup).
- Dimensional modeling: separation of quantitative facts and qualitative dimensions (Dimension, Domain, Enumerable/Non-enumerableDimension, Member, DimensionedElement).
- Versioning: managing model evolution and references across DataPointModel, Framework, Taxonomy and modules.
- Dimension validation: DataCube and DataPoint definitions that enable automated validation of combination rules and permissible dimension members.
- Hierarchical relationships: HierarchyRelationship, RuleRelationship, PresentationRelationship and other links to express aggregation and presentation logic.
- Presentation perspective: representation of tables, rows, columns, headers and cells for human- and machine-readable outputs.
- Constraints and architectures: metamodel constraints, data-warehouse specific rules and alignment with the European XBRL Taxonomy Architecture (EXTA).
- XBRL integration: guidance for accompanying XBRL taxonomies so DPMs can be consumed by reporting systems.
Applications
ISO 5116-1 is practical for:
- Supervisory authorities publishing standardized reporting definitions and XBRL taxonomies.
- Banks and regulated entities implementing consistent reporting processes and preparing regulatory submissions.
- IT architects & data modelers who design multidimensional or relational schemas, data warehouses, and automated validation engines.
- XBRL taxonomy authors and software vendors building tools for taxonomy generation, reporting validation and transformation. Practical benefits include reduced ambiguity and redundancy in definitions, improved data quality and interoperability, automated validation of reporting data, and streamlined generation of reporting formats and database schemas.
