ISO 5149-1:2014 specifies the requirements for the safety of persons and property, provides guidance for the protection of the environment, and establishes procedures for the operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigerating systems and the recovery of refrigerants. ISO 5149-1:2014 specifies the classification and selection criteria applicable to the refrigerating systems and heat pumps. These classification and selection criteria are used in ISO 5149‑2, ISO 5149‑3, and ISO 5149‑4. ISO 5149-1:2014 applies to: a) refrigerating systems, stationary or mobile, of all sizes including heat pumps; b) secondary cooling or heating systems; c) the location of the refrigerating systems; and d) replaced parts and added components after adoption of this part of ISO 5149 if they are not identical in function and in the capacity. ISO 5149-1:2014 applies to fixed or mobile systems, except to vehicle air conditioning systems covered by a specific product standard, e.g. ISO 13043 and SAE J 639. ISO 5149-1:2014 is applicable to new refrigerating systems, extensions or modifications of already existing systems, and for used systems, being transferred to and operated on another site. ISO 5149-1:2014 also applies in the case of the conversion of a system to another refrigerant. Systems containing refrigerants which are not listed in ISO 817 are not covered in ISO 5149-1:2014.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5149-1:2014 - "Refrigerating systems and heat pumps - Safety and environmental requirements - Part 1: Definitions, classification and selection criteria" defines the terminology, classification schemes, and selection criteria used to ensure the safe design, operation and environmental protection of refrigerating systems and heat pumps. It applies to stationary and mobile systems (excluding vehicle air‑conditioning covered by product standards), secondary cooling/heating systems, system modifications, transfers between sites and conversions to alternative refrigerants. Systems using refrigerants not listed in ISO 817 are excluded.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Terms and definitions: standardized vocabulary for refrigerating systems, components, pressure sides, sealed/self‑contained systems, cascade/absorption systems, direct/indirect systems and more.
- Classification: occupancy classes, system types (limited charge, direct/indirect, double indirect), location classifications and refrigerant safety classes - used to select appropriate safety measures.
- Selection criteria: guidance for choosing system configurations, refrigerant charge limits and protective measures based on location and occupancy.
- Refrigerant considerations: compatibility with ISO 817 designations, safety and environmental criteria (toxicity, flammability, contamination risks).
- Quantitative guidance: methods for calculating allowable refrigerant quantities per occupied space and space volume calculations (see Annex A).
- Heat‑transfer fluids and safety aspects: considerations for ingestion, contamination, toxicity, pressure, thermal properties and marking requirements.
- Hazard guidance: informative annexes describe potential hazards, safety classifications and recommended protective actions (Annexes B and C).
- Documentation and normative links: criteria intended for use with ISO 5149‑2 (design/construction/testing), ISO 5149‑3 (installation site) and ISO 5149‑4 (operation/maintenance/repair/recovery).
Practical applications and users
ISO 5149-1:2014 is essential for:
- HVAC‑R system designers and manufacturers selecting refrigerants and configuring equipment.
- Installation and commissioning engineers assessing location, charge limits and ventilation requirements.
- Maintenance, service and safety teams executing repairs, refrigerant recovery and system modifications.
- Facility managers, safety officers and regulators developing site safety plans and compliance checks.
- Environmental and refrigerant transition projects converting systems to alternative refrigerants.
