ISO 5182:2016 specifies the characteristics of materials for resistance welding electrodes and ancillary equipment which are used for carrying current and transmitting force to the work.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 5182:2016 (Resistance welding electrode materials)
ISO 5182:2016 specifies the required characteristics of materials for resistance welding electrodes and ancillary equipment used to carry current and transmit force to the work. The standard classifies electrode materials, defines minimum mechanical and electrical properties, gives test methods (hardness, conductivity, softening temperature), and provides a designation system and typical applications. ISO 5182 is intended for manufacturers, purchasers and users of welding electrodes and resistance‑welding equipment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material classification: Three groups are defined:
- Group A - Copper and copper alloys (several types for different strength/conductivity balances)
- Group B - Sintered/refractory materials (e.g., Cu/W, Cu/WC, Mo, W, W/Ag)
- Group C - Dispersion‑strengthened copper (DSC) alloys
- Property limits and composition: Table 3 (in the standard) lists nominal alloying elements, available forms, Vickers hardness (HV30) minimums, electrical conductivity (MS/m and % IACS) and softening temperatures for each material grade.
- Test methods:
- Vickers hardness per ISO 6507‑1 (300 N load referenced in the standard).
- Electrical conductivity measurement using eddy‑current method per ASTM E1004, or other mutually agreed methods.
- Softening temperature defined as the maximum temperature which, if held for 2 h, reduces hardness by no more than 15% - testing procedure to be agreed between supplier and purchaser if not standardized.
- Designation: Materials are designated by standard number, group, type and material number (example: ISO 5182:20XX – A 2/1).
- Safety note: Alloys containing beryllium require precautions (dust/fume inhalation) during dry grinding, polishing or welding.
Applications - Who uses ISO 5182
- Electrode and tooling manufacturers specifying material grades for spot, seam, projection, flash and butt resistance welding.
- Automotive and appliance OEMs and contract welders selecting electrodes for coated steels, aluminium, stainless and high‑strength steels.
- Welding equipment designers and maintenance engineers who need material property data (hardness, conductivity, softening temperature) for current‑carrying parts, holders, wheels and shafts.
- Practical benefits: consistent material selection, predictable electrode life, improved weld quality and interchangeability of parts.
