This International Standard specifies flash-connector dimensions for hand-held cameras.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 519:1992 - "Photography - Hand-held cameras - Flash-connector dimensions" - is an international standard that defines the mechanical and basic contact requirements for flash connectors used on hand-held cameras. Its purpose is to ensure reliable electrical and mechanical coupling between camera bodies and external flash units or accessories, promoting interoperability, safety and consistent user experience across manufacturers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Connector dimensions and tolerances: The standard specifies the required flash-connector geometry (shown in its figure and table) so plugs and sockets from different manufacturers mate correctly.
- Electrical polarity marking: Symbols used in the drawing designate electrical polarity for safe and consistent wiring.
- Mechanical contact design:
- The inner pin is required to be eccentric with the outer bush to ensure good electrical contact.
- The plug outside contact must provide spring action and an axial separation force of 5 N to 15 N, achieved by slots or other springing features.
- Design freedoms and exclusions:
- The cone-shaped tip dimensions and the protruding length of socket insulation and outside contact are not fully specified, allowing some material and manufacturing flexibility; however, these should not be excessively long because they affect overall coupling length.
- Edition changes: The 1992 second edition increased the length of the plug pin, socket cavity depth and the upper limit of the axial separation force compared with the 1974 edition.
Practical applications
- Ensures compatibility between camera bodies and external flashguns, sync cords and certain accessories.
- Guides product designers and mechanical engineers in camera and flash accessory development to meet standard connector interfaces.
- Used by test labs and quality assurance teams to verify connector tolerances, spring force and polarity marking.
- Helps repair technicians and aftermarket accessory makers produce or replace connectors that work reliably with compliant cameras and flashes.
Who should use this standard
- Camera and flash unit manufacturers
- Accessory and adapter designers
- Standards compliance and regulatory teams
- Test laboratories and certification bodies
- Technical authors and repair services
Related standards
While ISO 519 focuses on mechanical connector dimensions for hand-held camera flash connectors, manufacturers often reference related electrical and safety standards (e.g., camera electrical safety, EMC and photography technical committees) to ensure full product compliance.
