ISO 52022-3:2017 specifies a detailed method, based on spectral data of the transmittance and reflectance of the constituent materials (solar protection devices and the glazing), to determine the total solar energy transmittance, the total light transmittance and other relevant solar-optical data of the combination. If spectral data are not available, the methodology can be adapted to use integrated data.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 52022-3:2017 - part of the ISO series on the energy performance of buildings - defines a detailed calculation method to evaluate the solar and daylight characteristics of solar protection devices combined with glazing. The standard calculates metrics such as total solar energy transmittance and total light transmittance using spectral transmittance and reflectance data of constituent materials (glazing and shading elements). Where spectral data are unavailable, the method can be adapted to use integrated data.
Key topics
- Scope and outputs
- Determination of solar-optical parameters for glazing + solar protection combinations (e.g., louvres, venetian blinds, roller blinds).
- Outputs include total solar energy transmittance, total light transmittance and related solar-optical data.
- Method basis
- Spectral data of transmittance and reflectance of materials form the primary input.
- If spectral data are not available, integrated (broadband) data may be used with adapted procedures.
- Geometry and positioning
- Applicable to devices located internally, externally, or between glazing panes; ventilation of the blind is included.
- Method assumes normal incidence and treats diffuse irradiation as if direct.
- Limited to near-vertical glazing (vertical ±15°). Angular dependence is not generally modeled except via equivalent characteristics for louvres/blinds.
- Modeling details
- Treats louvres and venetian blinds by deriving equivalent solar-optical characteristics (may vary with incidence angle).
- Provides calculation intervals, input requirements for solid layers and gas spaces, heat transfer and energy balance formulations, and reporting templates (Annex A–F).
- Limitations
- No full angular dependence for all materials; for situations outside scope (inclined glazing, complex angular effects) see related standards.
Applications
ISO 52022-3:2017 is practical for:
- Architects and façade designers assessing shading performance and daylight access.
- Building energy modelers and simulation specialists calculating solar gains through glazed façades with shading.
- Product manufacturers of glazing and solar protection systems for performance data and product specification.
- Regulators and compliance bodies applying EPB (Energy Performance of Buildings) frameworks.
- Consultants performing glazing selection, solar control optimization, and indoor comfort/lighting studies.
Typical uses: compliance documentation, specification of glazing + blind systems, predictive energy modeling, and comparative assessment of shading strategies.
