This document specifies the requirements for the attachment of multi-turn actuators to valves. Throughout this document, “actuator” can be understood as “actuator and/or gearbox” providing a multi-turn and/or linear output. It specifies: — flange dimensions necessary for the attachment of actuators to industrial valves [see Figure 1 a)] or to intermediate supports [see Figure 1 b)]; — those driving component dimensions of actuators which are necessary to attach them to the driven components; — reference values for torque and thrust for flanges having the dimensions specified in this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5210:2023 - "Industrial valves - Multi-turn valve actuator attachments" defines the mechanical interface between multi-turn actuators (or actuator + gearbox combinations) and industrial valves or intermediate supports. The third edition (2023) standardizes flange dimensions, driving/driven component interfaces, and reference torque and thrust values so actuators and valves from different manufacturers are mechanically compatible.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Flange dimensions and bolt patterns: Standard flange types F05 through F60 with specified diameters, minimum/maximum depths and required number/spacing of studs or bolts (see Table 2 and Figure 2). Clearance holes follow ISO 273.
- Maximum torque and thrust: Reference simultaneous torque (Nm) and axial thrust (kN) values per flange type (Table 1). Examples: F05 = 20 Nm / 10 kN, F12 = 250 Nm / 70 kN, F35 = 5 000 Nm / 700 kN, F60 = 40 000 Nm / 4 000 kN. Values are based on bolts in tension at 290 MPa and a friction coefficient of 0.2.
- Driving and driven component dimensions: Detailed dimensional requirements for assemblies that transmit torque and/or thrust - Group A (torque + thrust), Groups B–D (torque only), and a linear actuator group (thrust only). Referenced figures and Tables 4–8 define clearances, engagement depths and maximum face contact dimensions.
- Keys and keyways: New in 2023 - Annex B (normative) provides dimensions and tolerances for keys/keyways used in torque-only interfaces.
- Design considerations: Annex A explains calculation methods. The standard advises designers to account for additional torques/thrusts from sizing, safety factors and inertia; material proof stresses and bolt strength affect transmittable loads.
Practical applications
- Standardizing actuator-to-valve mounting interfaces to enable cross-manufacturer compatibility and simplify spare-parts management.
- Specifying flange size and fasteners during valve or actuator selection to ensure the assembly can transmit required torque and axial loads.
- Guiding retrofit and upgrade projects where actuators are replaced or upgraded without valve modification.
- Informing mechanical design of couplings, intermediate supports and gearbox attachments in pipelines, power plants, water treatment, chemical and oil & gas installations.
Who would use ISO 5210:2023
- Valve and actuator manufacturers (product design and QA)
- OEMs and integrators (pumps, skids, HVAC)
- Plant and mechanical engineers (specification and procurement)
- Maintenance and asset managers (retrofit and spare selection)
- Standards committees and conformity assessors
