ISO 5263-1:2004 specifies an apparatus and the procedure for the laboratory-wet disintegration of chemical pulps. This apparatus and procedure are required for preparation of the test portion in a number of other International Standards dealing with pulps. In principle, this method is applicable to all kind of chemical pulps, including recovered fibres. It is not suitable for mechanical pulps and some very long-fibred chemical pulps such as those from cotton and similar materials.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5263-1:2004 is an international standard that specifies the apparatus and procedure for the laboratory wet disintegration of chemical pulps. This standard is essential for preparing test portions of chemical pulps, including recovered fibers, in various pulp testing methods. It ensures consistent and reliable mechanical treatment of pulps to separate interlaced fibers without significantly altering their structural properties. The scope excludes mechanical pulps and certain long-fiber chemical pulps such as cotton.
Developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 6, this standard aids in quality control and testing accuracy within the pulp and paper industry by standardizing the disintegration process, critical for subsequent analysis.
Key Topics
- Disintegration Definition: Mechanical treatment in water that separates fibers in chemical pulps without damaging their physical structure.
- Apparatus Specifications: Detailed construction and use of the Standard disintegrator, including materials, dimensions, and rotational frequency requirements.
- Test Portion Preparation: Guidelines on weighing, soaking times, and water quality (standard water per ISO 14487) to prepare pulp samples before disintegration.
- Disintegration Procedure: Instructions on operating the disintegrator with specified revolutions based on dry matter content to ensure complete fiber separation.
- Test Reporting Requirements: Comprehensive reporting details including sample identification, water quality, soaking times, dry matter content, and deviations from standard procedure.
- Quality Control of Equipment: Regular checks to confirm the disintegrator operates correctly, with precise propeller blade settings and speed.
Applications
ISO 5263-1:2004 serves as a foundational method for laboratories testing chemical pulps, supporting various quality and characterization assessments:
- Pulp Quality Testing: Ensures consistent sample preparation for evaluating pulp strength, fiber properties, and impurities.
- Recovered Fiber Analysis: Applicable for recycled fiber testing, enabling reliable evaluations in paper recycling operations.
- Standardized Testing Protocols: Supports compliance with other ISO pulp standards that require wet disintegration as a preparatory step.
- Research and Development: Assists in fiber technology development by providing reproducible disintegration for experimental testing.
- Process Optimization: Helps pulp manufacturers monitor processing effects by assessing fiber conditions post-disintegration.
