This part of ISO 5267 specifies a method for determination of the drainability of a pulp suspension in water in terms of the "Canadian Standard" freeness in millilitres. In principle, this method is applicable to all kinds of pulp in aqueous suspension. NOTE Treatments which produce a large proportion of fines may induce an anomalous rise in freeness (false freeness), as a rule at values below 100 ml.

Overview
ISO 5267-2:2001 defines the “Canadian Standard” freeness method for determining the drainability of pulp suspensions. The standard quantifies freeness as the volume (millilitres) of filtrate collected from the side orifice of a dedicated freeness tester. It is applicable in principle to all types of pulp in aqueous suspension and is widely used in pulp and paper laboratory testing, process control and quality assurance.

- Procedure: Pour the conditioned 1 000 ml sample into the chamber, start flow by opening valves as specified, then measure filtrate volume from the side orifice. Two determinations are required; report the mean. Duplicates differing by more than 2% must be repeated.
- Expression and reporting: Mean freeness in ml, test temperature/concentration (if different), funnel type (modified or original), and any unusual conditions. Full reporting items are listed in clause 9.
