This document specifies the terms and definitions related to the use of synchronous belt drives for mechanical power transmission and where positive indexing or synchronization is required.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5288:2024 - Synchronous belt drives - Vocabulary is the fourth edition of the ISO international standard that defines terms and definitions used for synchronous belt drives (also known as timing belts, positive belt drives or gear belts). The standard covers terminology needed where positive indexing or synchronization is required for mechanical power transmission. It updates the 2017 edition with the addition of Clause 4 (symbols) and is produced by ISO/TC 41 (Pulleys and belts), Subcommittee SC 4.
Key topics and technical terms covered
The document is a vocabulary standard: it does not prescribe designs or test methods but standardizes language used across design, manufacturing and maintenance. Major subject groups include:
- General system terms: synchronous belt drive, centre distance, open vs endless belt drives.
- Synchronous belts: definitions for belt pitch length, pitch line, pitch line differential, width and height, and belt types (single-sided, double-sided, endless, open).
- Tooth profile and teeth: trapezoidal and curvilinear profiles, tooth, tip line, root line, tooth height, tip/root radii, tooth angle, working and non‑working flanks.
- Pulleys and grooves: synchronous pulley, pitch reference cylinder/circle, pitch diameter, outside diameter, groove, tip/root circles, groove depth, groove flank geometry, width at groove root/crest, measuring pulley and measuring groove clearance.
- Symbols: Clause 4 adds standardized symbols used in drawings and technical specifications.
- Cross-references to synchronous belt dimensional standards where profile dimensions are specified.
These standardized terms ensure consistent interpretation of dimensions such as pitch, pitch diameter, tooth pitch, groove depth, and measuring pulley clearance.
Practical applications and intended users
ISO 5288:2024 is a reference vocabulary used by:
- Mechanical and design engineers specifying synchronous belt drives in conveyors, robotics, automotive ancillary systems, printing equipment, and precision indexers.
- Belt and pulley manufacturers and tooling suppliers for consistent product data sheets, drawings and quality control.
- Maintenance teams and technicians for service manuals and replacement specifications.
- Standards writers, regulatory bodies and procurement officers to avoid ambiguity in contracts and specifications.
- Technical documentation authors and CAD modelers for consistent naming and symbol usage.
Using ISO 5288 improves clarity in design specifications, supplier communication, assembly drawings, inspection reports and international trade documentation.
