The method consists in distilling of the ammonia from an alkaline solution, absorbing in an excess of standard volumetric sulphuric acid solution and back-titrating with standard volumetric sodium hydroxide solution. It is applicable only in the absence of urea or its derivatives, of cyanamide and of organic nitrogenous compounds.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5314:1981 defines an internationally recognized titrimetric method for the determination of ammoniacal nitrogen content in fertilizers, following distillation. Issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard provides analytical laboratories and fertilizer manufacturers with a clear protocol to assess ammoniacal nitrogen in relevant fertilizer products. The procedure is applicable when urea, its derivatives, cyanamide, and organic nitrogenous compounds are absent.
Fertility management and crop yield often rely on accurate assessment of ammoniacal nitrogen, making compliant methodologies vital for product quality, regulatory adherence, and international trade.
Key Topics
- Purpose of the Method: To accurately quantify ammoniacal nitrogen, a key nutrient component in many fertilizer formulations.
- Scope of Applicability: Applicable to fertilizers free from urea and related derivatives, cyanamide, and organic nitrogenous compounds to avoid interference.
- Core Methodology:
- Conversion of sample to an alkaline solution
- Distillation of ammonia
- Absorption of distilled ammonia in standard volumetric sulphuric acid
- Back-titration of excess acid using standard sodium hydroxide solution
- Use of a color indicator (methyl red or screened methyl red) to detect endpoint
- Required Equipment:
- Laboratory glassware compliant with relevant ISO standards
- Distillation apparatus with specific configurations
- Burettes, volumetric flasks and pipettes, and mechanical flask shaker
- Precision and Quality Control:
- Strict procedural guidelines to ensure repeatability and reproducibility
- Inclusion of blank and check tests for robust measurement validation
Applications
ISO 5314:1981 is fundamental for:
- Fertilizer Quality Assurance: Ensures the accurate labeling and content of ammoniacal nitrogen in fertilizer products.
- Regulatory Compliance: Meets the requirements of international regulations and national guidelines concerning nitrogen content declaration.
- Laboratory Testing: Establishes a standardized methodology for analytical labs testing fertilizer samples for ammoniacal nitrogen as part of product development, routine quality assurance, and registration processes.
- International Trade: Supports global commerce in fertilizers by providing a harmonized approach for nitrogen content determination, reducing disputes and facilitating export certification.
Related Standards
For comprehensive laboratory practices and accurate chemical analysis in fertilizer testing, the following ISO standards are often referenced alongside ISO 5314:
- ISO/R 385: Burettes - Specifications for laboratory burettes used in titrimetric analysis
- ISO 641: Laboratory glassware - Interchangeable spherical ground joints
- ISO 648: Laboratory glassware - One-mark pipettes
- ISO 1042: Laboratory glassware - One-mark volumetric flasks
These related standards ensure proper calibration and functionality of laboratory apparatus, central to achieving the accuracy required by ISO 5314.
By following ISO 5314:1981, organizations can assure precise ammoniacal nitrogen measurements, enabling effective fertilizer management and reinforcing confidence in product consistency. Using the standard promotes best practices in chemical analysis, guarantees international acceptability, and underpins regulatory compliance in the fertilizer industry.
