Abstract
Overview
ISO 5456-1:1996 - Technical drawings - Projection methods - Part 1: Synopsis - is the first edition (1996) of the ISO synopsis that surveys the various projection systems used in technical drawings. It summarizes projection types (orthogonal, axonometric, central/central projection and oblique variants), establishes geometric orientation conventions (coordinate axes and planes) and defines basic terms such as pictorial representation, true view, exploded view and principal view. Annex A is informative. Parts 2–4 of ISO 5456 provide detailed specifications and application rules.
Key topics and requirements
- Survey of projection methods: classification by projector type (parallel or convergent), projection-plane position (orthogonal or oblique) and object orientation (parallel/orthogonal or oblique to the projection plane).
- Definitions: standardized vocabulary for pictorials, true views, exploded views and principal views (drawing on ISO 10209 terminology).
- Geometrical orientation: prescription of coordinate axes (X, Y, Z) and coordinate planes (XY, YZ, XZ) using the right‑hand rule (referencing ISO 1503).
- Projection invariables: which geometric properties are preserved for each method:
- Central projection: similarity of figures lying in planes parallel to the projection plane (angles preserved in those planes).
- Oblique projection: parallelism of lines (except when parallel to projectors), divisional ratios and geometric measures in planes parallel to the projection plane.
- Orthogonal projection: parallelism, divisional ratios, sizes of angles and lengths in planes parallel to the projection plane; right angles preserved when a side is parallel to the projection plane.
- Normative references and relationship to other parts: directs users to ISO 5456-2 (orthographic), ISO 5456-3 (axonometric), ISO 5456-4 (central projection) and ISO 10209 vocabulary standards.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 5456-1 is a reference for professionals who select or interpret projection methods in technical documentation:
- Mechanical, architectural and civil drafters and designers
- CAD/CAM practitioners and technical illustrators
- Technical authors producing manuals, assembly/maintenance documentation and instruction books
- Producers of exploded views, X‑ray and pictorial representations used in sales, service and training
- Standards committees and educators teaching drawing conventions
Practical uses include choosing the appropriate projection method for clarity, ensuring consistent CAD output, and aligning multi-view orthographic drawings with pictorials and exploded assemblies.
