This document specifies tests for determining the strength and wear resistance of guards for power take-off (PTO) drive- shafts on tractors and machinery used in agriculture and forestry, and their acceptance criteria. It is intended to be used in combination with ISO 5673-1:2005. It is applicable to the testing of PTO drive- shaft guards and their restraining means. It is not applicable to the testing of guards designed and constructed to be used as steps. This document is not applicable to guards for power take-off drive shafts that are manufactured before the date of publication of this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5674:2024 specifies strength and wear tests and acceptance criteria for guards used on power take-off (PTO) drive-shafts on tractors and agricultural and forestry machinery. Intended to be used in combination with ISO 5673-1:2005, the standard defines test methods, required test equipment, environmental conditions and final acceptance criteria for PTO drive-shaft guards and their restraining means. It excludes guards designed and constructed to be used as steps and does not apply retroactively to guards manufactured before publication.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope: Wear tests, bearing corrosion tests, dynamic and static strength tests (radial and axial), joint and tube tests, dynamic swivel tests, and restraining-means tests. Sub-zero impact and static axial tests are included for low-temperature performance.
- Test sequence and documentation: Tests follow a defined schedule and sequence (Annex A); test reports are specified (Annex C contains a typical test report).
- Environmental and material checks:
- UV resistance validation for plastic or UV-sensitive guards (Annex B).
- Use of potable water or specified salt solution (50 g/l ± 5 g/l) where required.
- Specified test dust (equal parts by mass of organic and mineral dust) for wear tests.
- Operating conditions:
- Rotational speeds: 1 300 r/min for Type 4 PTO shafts and 1 000 r/min for other PTO types when rotation is required.
- Ambient test temperature range: 5 °C to 35 °C for ambient tests.
- Measuring accuracy (examples from Table 1): rotational speed ±0.5 %, temperature ±1.0 °C, time ±0.2 %, length ±0.5 %, force ±1.0 % (with the document’s specified tolerance allowances).
- Equipment: Test rigs must hold and rotate PTO shafts at the specified speeds, apply controlled loads at defined temperatures and permit realistic mounting and restraining consistent with ISO 500-1:2014.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
- Machine and PTO guard manufacturers: to validate guard designs, verify wear resistance and mechanical strength, and demonstrate compliance with recognized test methods.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies: to perform standardized strength, wear and corrosion testing and issue test reports for conformity assessment.
- Regulators and market surveillance: to assess safety performance of PTO guards used on tractors and agricultural/forestry machinery.
- OEMs, maintenance providers and fleet owners: to select compliant guards, specify replacement parts and understand expected service performance under defined environmental conditions.
