ISO 5707:2007 specifies the minimum performance and information requirements and certain dimensional requirements for satisfactory functioning of milking machines, for milking and cleaning. It also specifies minimum requirements for materials, design, manufacture and installation. ISO 5707:2007 is applicable to milking machines for milking cows, water buffaloes, sheep and goats where animals are milked with pulsation created by vacuum, and where milk is, at least partly, transported with the help of air flow. Some clauses are not applicable to all types of milking machines. The qualitative requirements also apply to installations for milking other mammals used for milk production.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5707:2007 - Milking machine installations - Construction and performance - sets minimum performance, information, dimensional, material, design, manufacture and installation requirements for milking machine systems. It applies to milking machines for cows, water buffaloes, sheep and goats where pulsation is created by vacuum and where milk is at least partly transported by airflow. Some clauses are type-specific; qualitative requirements also cover other milk‑producing mammals.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and testing
- Specifies minimum performance and information requirements and references test methods (see ISO 6690 for mechanical tests).
- Allows alternative designs if they achieve equivalent results; such features must be documented in the user’s manual.
- Vacuum system
- Design and regulation of vacuum pumps, regulators and gauges; requirements for air lines, interceptors and sanitary traps.
- Measuring connections defined (airflow and vacuum points such as A1, A2, Vm, Vr, Vp, Pe) to support performance verification.
- Pulsators must be isolatable to measure leakage and air used for pulsation.
- Pulsation system
- Requirements for pulsation rate, pulsator ratio and pulsation chamber vacuum phases (design data and air line sizing).
- Milk system
- Design of milklines, milk inlets, receivers, releasers, delivery lines and drainage; attention to air leakage and prevention of frothing/foam.
- Milking unit
- Teatcups, attachments, removal, vacuum shut-off, vents and milk recording attachments. Long milk tubes and bucket units are addressed.
- Materials, safety and hygiene
- Cleaning and maintenance
- Minimum cleaning and access requirements to support hygiene and measurement access points; specific annexes cover sizing and pump capacity.
Applications and users
ISO 5707:2007 is intended for:
- Milking machine manufacturers designing components and complete installations.
- Agricultural engineers and parlour designers specifying milklines, vacuum systems and pulsation equipment.
- Farm operators and installers commissioning, testing and maintaining milking installations.
- Regulators and testing laboratories verifying compliance and hygienic performance. Practical uses include system design, procurement specifications, commissioning tests, troubleshooting and documentation of special design features.
