This document specifies a method for measuring power generation characteristics to evaluate and determine the output power, mechanical quality factor, electromechanical coupling factor and output efficiency of piezoelectric resonant devices used for self-sustaining power sources. This document defines vibration-based test methods and characteristic parameters in order to accurately and practically evaluate the performance of piezoelectric resonant devices.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5712:2022 - "Fine ceramics (advanced ceramics, advanced technical ceramics) - Method for measuring the power generation characteristics of piezoelectric resonant devices for stand-alone power sources" - provides a standardized, vibration-based test method to evaluate the power-generation performance of piezoelectric resonant devices used in self-sustaining (stand‑alone) power sources. The standard defines how to measure output power, mechanical quality factor (Qm), electromechanical coupling coefficient (k²) and output efficiency, and it establishes practical test procedures and required apparatus for repeatable, comparable results.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Measurement principle: Apply controlled sinusoidal mechanical vibration to a piezoelectric resonant device and measure the electrical output (voltage/current) across a load resistance to derive power and characteristic parameters.
- Characteristic parameters specified: resonance frequency, resonance peak width, output power, mechanical quality factor (Qm), electromechanical coupling factor (k²), and output efficiency.
- Required apparatus: calibrated voltmeter (input impedance ≥10× device output impedance), load resistance, vibration device with feedback control, accelerometer, laser displacement meter (when applicable), mounting jig, recorder and vibration controller.
- Device configuration: planar piezoelectric material bonded to a substrate with an additional tip mass to form a resonant structure; electrodes, lead wires and thickness polarization are specified operational considerations.
- Test procedure highlights: apply sinusoidal vibration, sweep frequency in a range centered on the resonance (typically 0.9–1.1 × resonance frequency), record output voltage and acceleration continuously, and compute characteristic values per Clause 8.
- Practical measurement constraints: mounting jig must have natural frequency above the measurement band; laser displacement and accelerometer bandwidth must cover applied frequencies; voltmeter and impedance matching rules to avoid measurement loading.
- Supporting material: Annex A (guidelines for selecting vibration device and mounting jig) and Annex B (example of data evaluation).
Practical applications and who would use this standard
ISO 5712 is directly relevant to:
- Manufacturers of piezoelectric ceramics and resonant energy-harvesting modules
- Test and calibration laboratories performing component qualification and QA
- R&D teams designing vibration-powered IoT sensors, wireless sensor networks, TPMS, RFID tags and other low‑power stand‑alone devices
- Product engineers and system integrators evaluating energy harvesting performance and conversion efficiency
- Standards developers and procurement/specification authors who require consistent measurement data
Using ISO 5712 helps ensure consistent, comparable performance data for piezoelectric resonant devices intended for energy-harvesting, asset monitoring, and other stand-alone power applications.
