ISO 5744:2004 specifies methods of test for checking the correct functioning of pliers and nippers. The test parameters have been specified on the basis of the functional uses of the tools.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5744:2004 - "Pliers and nippers - Methods of test" specifies standardized test methods for checking the correct functioning of pliers and nippers. The third edition (2004) defines reproducible procedures and parameters based on functional uses of the tools to verify strength, cutting performance and mechanical integrity. The standard ensures consistent evaluation for quality control, product development and conformity assessment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and sequence: All tests are performed on the same tool in the sequence specified by the standard. Tolerances for positioning, dimensions and forces are generally ±2.5%.
- Load test: Defines application points (distance l from joint rivet), initial loading (e.g., 50 N), repeated application of the specified load F and measurement of permanent set (difference in handle width). Comfort grips should preferably be removed for testing.
- Cutting tests (wire cutting):
- Verification of test wire using tungsten carbide cutters with a 60° ±1° inclusive angle and a 0.3 mm ±0.02 mm radius.
- Medium-hard and hard wire test procedures with correction factors (1.6 for medium-hard, 2 for hard) to calculate required cutting forces when test geometry differs. Example cutting-force entries are provided in Tables (e.g., medium-hard d = 1.6 mm ≈ 1 800 N; hard wires range from ~2 000 N to ~5 700 N depending on diameter).
- Requirements that cutting edges show no indentation or distortion and that tools remain serviceable after testing.
- Torsion test: Apply torque with handles clamped; angular movement α must not exceed specified values and tool function must remain unimpaired.
- Soft wire cutting test: Performed after hard/medium-hard cutting tests to check full-length cutting capability (requirements depend on tool type-diagonal, end-cutting, combined pliers).
- Test pieces and hardness:
- Test piece hardness for load/cutting tests: typically 30–40 HRC for load/cutting test pieces and 45–50 HRC for torsion test pieces.
- Normative references: EN 12166 and IEC 60317-0-1 are cited for wire specifications.
