This document specifies the dimensions of an unnotched impact test piece of sintered metal materials. The test piece may be obtained directly by pressing and sintering or by machining a sintered part. This document applies to all sintered metals and alloys, with the exception of hardmetals. However, for certain materials (for example, materials with low porosity or materials with high ductility), it may be more appropriate to use a notched test piece which, in this case, will give results with less scatter. (In this case, refer to ISO 148-1.) NOTE For porous sintered materials, the results obtained from impact tests on unnotched specimens according to this standard are not fully comparable with results obtained from tests on solid metals tested on notched specimens.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5754:2023 is an international standard that specifies the dimensions and requirements for unnotched impact test pieces made from sintered metal materials, excluding hardmetals. This standard covers the preparation and characterization of impact test specimens used to evaluate the toughness and impact resistance of sintered metals and alloys. It applies to test pieces manufactured either by direct pressing and sintering or by machining existing sintered parts.
The goal of ISO 5754:2023 is to provide consistent, reproducible testing conditions to assess the impact behavior of sintered materials, ensuring reliable comparison of material properties across different laboratories and industries.
Key Topics
-
Test Piece Dimensions
The standard defines precise dimensions for the unnotched impact test specimen:- Length: 55 ± 1 mm
- Width (A): 10 ± 0.2 mm
- Thickness (B): 10 ± 0.2 mm
The design allows for a corner radius of up to 1 mm to enable robust tooling and minimize tool wear during specimen production.
-
Material Scope
ISO 5754:2023 applies to all sintered metals and alloys except for hardmetals (cemented carbides). It acknowledges that for materials with low porosity or high ductility, notched specimens (as per ISO 148-1) may yield more consistent impact results. -
Marking and Orientation
Test pieces must be marked to identify the pressing direction since the impact test must be conducted with the impact force applied normal (perpendicular) to this pressing direction for standardized results. -
Testing Method
Impact tests are performed using a Charpy impact testing machine following the method described in ISO 148-1. The standard ensures compatibility and consistency by referencing this related test method. -
Limitations and Notes
For porous sintered materials, test results from unnotched specimens may not be fully comparable with those from solid metals tested on notched specimens due to differences in material morphology and impact behavior.
Applications
ISO 5754:2023 plays a crucial role in materials engineering, quality control, and research for industries that utilize sintered metal components, such as:
-
Powder Metallurgy
Manufacturers use this standard to test raw sintered metal parts and components for mechanical properties, particularly impact toughness, to ensure material integrity before final assembly. -
Automotive Industry
Sintered metal parts like gears, bearings, and structural components are tested for impact resistance to meet safety and performance standards. -
Aerospace and Defense
High-performance sintered alloys used in these sectors require standardized impact testing to assess durability under dynamic loads. -
Tooling and Machinery
Sintered metal parts produced for tooling or mechanical applications are evaluated via this standard to verify resistance to brittle fracture. -
Research and Development
Material scientists and engineers use ISO 5754:2023 to characterize new sintered alloys and optimize sintering processes by analyzing their toughness behavior.
