Specifies requirements for taper plug and ring gauges used for the checking of type A, B and C tapers according to ISO 1089. Covers also definitions, dimensions, designation, materials, marking, and method of use. Cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 5822:1982), clause 4 of which has been technically revised.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5822:1988 specifies requirements for taper plug gauges and taper ring gauges used to check electrode tapers on spot welding equipment. The standard covers gauges for type A, B and C tapers (as defined in ISO 1089), and includes definitions, dimensions, designation, materials, marking and methods of use. ISO 5822:1988 is the second edition and revises clause 4 of the first edition.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Gauge types and designation
- Taper types
- Defines type A (suitable for straight thrust), type B (suitable for eccentric loading) and type C (suitable for electrode taps).
- Dimensions and tolerances
- Materials and hardness
- Gauge bodies: steel, heat-treated to HRc = 63–65.
- Handles: suitable unhardened steel or light alloys as appropriate.
- Marking
- Plug handles and ring gauges must be permanently marked with the full designation (standard number, type, nominal diameter).
- Method of use
- Specifies checking procedures for taper fit and permissible tolerances of taper diameter and taper length. Measurements are referenced to defined measuring planes and require the sample end face to be within those planes.
- Important limitation: angle variations cannot be checked with these gauges.
Applications and who uses it
- Quality control and inspection in:
- Spot welding equipment manufacturing and assembly
- Electrode production and replacement programs
- Maintenance and calibration workshops for welding plants
- Users:
- Welding engineers, QC inspectors, calibration labs, tooling and fixture designers, and OEMs of spot welding machines.
- Practical benefits:
- Ensures correct electrode taper fit for reliable weld quality, consistent contact resistance, and reduced electrode wear or misalignment.
