Lays down the dimensions and specifications of electrode back-ups, wedge electrodes and clamps for spot welding. Describes material, marking and designation.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5827:1983 is an International Standard prepared by ISO/TC 44 (Welding and allied processes) that defines the dimensions, material grades, marking and designation for spot-welding electrode back-ups, wedge electrodes and clamps. The standard provides figures, a table and layout details (figures 1–6) for semi-finished and finished back-up profiles, wedge electrode forms and clamp designs, supporting consistent specification, procurement and interchangeability.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Lays down dimensions and specifications for electrode back-ups, wedge electrodes and clamps used in spot welding.
- Materials: Calls out material requirements referenced to other ISO documents: back-up profile material A1/1 (see ISO 5182), wedge electrodes of brass Cu Zn46 Pb2 (ISO 426/2) and electrode grades such as A2/2 per ISO 5182.
- Dimensions and Forms: Illustrative figures define profile forms (A, B, C, D, etc.), wedge electrode forms (B, C, D) and clamp forms (E, F). The standard gives finished and semi-finished profile dimensions and layouts.
- Marking and Designation: Specifies marking rules and designation formats for easy identification. Examples in the standard include: Back-up Profile ISO 5827 A 2 000, Wedge electrode ISO 5827 B 50, and Clamp ISO 5827 E 35.
- Cooling and Assembly: Provides details for back-ups with cooling holes and the layout of assembled back-ups (including fixation hardware and insulation elements) to support cooling and integration into welding heads.
Applications
- Procurement and Specification: Use the standard to specify electrode back-ups, wedges and clamps with consistent designation and material grades for OEMs, suppliers and maintenance teams.
- Interchangeability: Standardized forms and marking enable rapid replacement and compatibility across machines and toolsets, reducing downtime.
- Weld Studies and Design: Complete back-ups can be represented by number of spots and the distance between spots (parameter a in the table and figure 4), supporting weld process planning and fixture design.
- Maintenance and Quality: Clear marking and material requirements help maintenance teams select correct spares and ensure consistent spot-weld quality.
Related Standards
- ISO 5182 (Materials for resistance welding electrodes and ancillary equipment)
- ISO 426/2 (Wrought brass-zinc alloys; Cu Zn46 Pb2)
- ISO 1302 (Surface texture indication)
