Includes a list of terms in English, French, Russian and German. The list is given in English in alphabetical order. This list is the second part of equivalent terms used in the field of aerospace construction.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5843-2:1990 - Aerospace rivets is the second part of the ISO 5843 series that establishes standardized, equivalent terminology used in aerospace construction. Published as the second edition in 1990 and prepared by ISO/TC 20 (Aircraft and space vehicles), this part provides an alphabetical English list of rivet‑related terms with equivalent expressions in French, Russian and German. German entries are included at the request of the committee and published under the responsibility of the German member body (DIN). Only the official ISO languages (English, French, Russian) are considered formal ISO terms.
Key topics
This terminology standard focuses on consistent multilingual naming and covers topics such as:
- Rivet types and head forms: countersunk, flat, mushroom, drilled, mandrel head, set tail, etc.
- Rivet geometry and dimensions: shank, head diameter, set‑head diameter, hole diameter, underhead fillet, top flat.
- Riveting operations and tooling: pneumatic riveting guns, bucking bars (dollies), hammers, countersinking, dimpling, broaching.
- Manufacturing and failure terms: break‑off (mandrel stem, pull‑stem), riveting defects, postforming, expansion.
- Inspection and marking: gauging diameters, marking depth, identification colouring and codes.
- Structure and indexes: foreword, scope, bilingual/multilingual term tables and alphabetical indexes for French, Russian and German.
(Entries are presented in English alphabetical order with direct equivalents in the other languages rather than prescriptive material or dimensional limits.)
Applications and users
ISO 5843-2 is a practical reference for anyone involved in international aerospace design, production and documentation who needs precise, consistent terminology:
- Aerospace engineers and designers specifying fasteners and joints
- Technical writers, standards authors and translators producing multilingual manuals and specifications
- Procurement and supply chain teams aligning part descriptions across suppliers and countries
- Quality, inspection and maintenance staff interpreting reports and work instructions
- Regulatory and certification bodies verifying consistent usage of terminology
Benefits include reduced ambiguity in specifications, improved translation accuracy, and smoother international procurement and maintenance processes.
