This document specifies the most common nominal dimensions, in millimetres, of: — shape type 6: straight cup grinding wheel; — shape type 11: taper cup grinding wheel; — shape type 27: depressed centre wheel for grinding or grinding/cutting-off; — shape type 28: depressed centre grinding wheel, concave shape; — shape type 29: depressed centre grinding wheel, convex shape. These bonded abrasive products are intended to be used for deburring and fettling/snagging of any surface of a workpiece using hand-held grinding machines (angle grinder). In this application, the workpiece is fixed and the grinding machine is guided by the operator. This document does not specify limit deviations and run-out tolerances, which are given in ISO 13942.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 603-14:2022 - "Bonded abrasive products - Dimensions - Part 14" defines the most common nominal dimensions for grinding wheels used for deburring and fettling/snagging with hand-held angle grinders. The standard covers five shape types (6, 11, 27, 28, 29) and presents dimension tables in millimetres (with inch equivalents where applicable). It focuses on geometry and designation; limit deviations and run-out tolerances are covered separately in ISO 13942.
Key topics and requirements
- Shape types covered:
- Type 6 - straight cup grinding wheel
- Type 11 - taper cup grinding wheel
- Type 27 - depressed centre wheel (grinding or grinding/cutting-off)
- Type 28 - depressed centre grinding wheel, concave
- Type 29 - depressed centre grinding wheel, convex
- Dimensional data: Common nominal dimensions (outside diameter, thickness, bore, rim width, elevation of depressed centre, etc.) are given in tables for each shape. Values are expressed in millimetres with inch values in brackets where relevant.
- Safety-by-design note: The document includes dimensional safety guidance (for example, a requirement that the thickness at bore E ≥ 0.25 × T in some tables).
- Designation and marking: Product designation follows ISO 525 (shape types, designation and marking).
- Scope limits: ISO 603-14 does not specify run-out or dimensional tolerances - see ISO 13942 for those requirements.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers and designers of bonded abrasive grinding wheels use ISO 603-14 to specify standard nominal sizes and to design products compatible with angle grinders for deburring and fettling.
- Purchasing and quality teams in metalworking, fabrication, foundries and maintenance departments rely on the standard to ensure interchangeability and correct wheel selection.
- Tool and safety engineers use the dimensional criteria to check fitment, mounting and safe operation on hand-held grinders.
- Standards bodies and testing labs reference ISO 603-14 when harmonizing dimensions and when combining geometric requirements with tolerancing standards (ISO 13942) and balance/performance tests (e.g., ISO 6103).
