Abstract
Overview
ISO 610:1990 is an international standard for high-tensile steel chains (round link) intended for use in mining equipment such as chain conveyors and coal ploughs. It specifies chain dimensions, mechanical properties, material and heat‑treatment requirements, testing and inspection procedures, and marking. The standard covers nominal chain sizes from 14 mm to 30 mm and defines three quality grades (B, C and D).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and application: Chains for conveyors (flexible/rigid), coal ploughs, coal cutters, power loaders, bucket elevators and similar mining haulage equipment. Not intended for lifting appliances (cranes/slings).
- Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed link geometry (pitch, inside/outside width, link length, weld dimensions) and permissible tolerances; matched-length requirements for short chain lengths.
- Material and metallurgy:
- Chains must be made from fully killed steel with reliable welding properties.
- Alloy steels (Ni, Cr, Mo, etc.) are specified for higher grades (C and D) to achieve required tensile properties while retaining notch toughness.
- Steel microstructure requirements (fine austenitic grain size) and chemical control are referenced.
- Heat treatment and workmanship: Mandatory heat treatment during manufacture; welded areas finished and inspected; inserted links must be processed to ensure uniformity.
- Mechanical properties and grades:
- Minimum breaking stresses and specified test forces are given for each size/grade.
- Defined relationships between test force, proof loading (manufacturer proof load ≥ 90% of the specified test force), and allowable elongation.
- Testing and inspection:
- Dimensional checks, tensile tests, bend, fatigue and notch impact tests are defined.
- Sampling plans (lots and sample sizes), anchorage and testing-machine requirements, autographic force-extension recording, and acceptance criteria are described.
- Marking and delivery condition: Identification/inspection marks, typical surface finish options (rust preventive, polished, coloured), and supply condition (normally uncoated/unpolished unless specified).
Applications and who uses this standard
- Mining equipment manufacturers specifying chain parts for conveyors, ploughs, bucket elevators and power loaders.
- Chain and steel producers designing and producing calibrated round-link high-tensile chains.
- Procurement engineers, QA/QC inspectors and testing laboratories responsible for acceptance testing, proof loading and conformity checks.
- Maintenance teams selecting replacement chain components to ensure compatibility and safety in haulage systems.
