This International Standard defines a range of climatological data required for building design, gives guidance on methods of measurement and proposes symbols to designate them. It does not deal with suffixes or concepts combining several types of data, or values derived from basic data such as degree-days or characteristic wind speed. The definitions and symbols given in this International Standard aim to harmonize the expression of climatological data which may be drawn on when drafting regulatory and standard documents and when definitions and symbols are required for building design and construction.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6243:1997 - Climatic data for building design - Proposed system of symbols is an international standard developed by ISO to harmonize the representation of climatic and meteorological data used in building design. The standard specifies a comprehensive set of climatological parameters, offers guidance on their measurement, and introduces a proposed system of symbols for the consistent designation of these data points. Its primary purpose is to provide clarity and uniformity for architects, engineers, regulators, and construction professionals who require climatic data for developing, analyzing, or regulating building projects.
This standard does not cover suffixes or combined concepts, nor does it address values derived from basic climatic data, such as degree-days or characteristic wind speed. It focuses on the fundamental definitions, measurements, and notational symbols essential for international communication in building design.
Key Topics
ISO 6243:1997 covers important areas related to climatic data for construction projects:
- Air Temperature: Measurement methods, units, and standardized symbols for minimum, maximum, mean, and period-specific temperature values.
- Solar Radiation: Guidance on measuring solar irradiance and energy (thermal and light), their forms (direct, diffuse, global), and notation for various orientations and statistical periods.
- Long-wave Radiation: Measurement and notation for radiation with wavelengths between 4 µm and 100 µm.
- Atmospheric Humidity: Definitions and symbols for relative humidity, vapor pressure, and water vapor content.
- Wind: Standard methods for wind speed and direction measurement at different heights and over specific intervals, as well as frequency and return period notation.
- Precipitation: Standardized approaches for recording rain and snow data, including maximum, average, and period-specific values.
- Symbol System: A structured symbol system for climatological data, enabling language-independent, consistent communication. Symbols and suffixes clearly represent physical quantities and statistical characteristics.
Applications
The standardization offered by ISO 6243:1997 is critical for:
- Building Design: Ensuring accurate and consistent climatic loads for heating, cooling, structural performance, and durability studies.
- Regulatory Documents: Drafting national and international building codes that rely on precise definitions and consistent use of climatic data.
- Engineering Calculations: Standardizing climatic parameters for structural design, energy analysis, daylighting studies, rainwater drainage, and material resilience.
- Data Exchange: Facilitating global data exchange in databases, technical documents, and scientific studies by eliminating uncertainty arising from inconsistent notations or terminologies.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Assisting architects, civil engineers, regulators, and meteorologists with a common ground for climatic data interpretation and application.
Related Standards
For effective application and broader context, ISO 6243:1997 refers to, and should be used alongside, the following standards:
- ISO 31: Quantities, units and symbols - Provides the foundational rules for scientific quantities and notation.
- ISO 3898: Bases for the design of structures – Notations – General symbols - Establishes additional symbol use for construction and engineering.
- WMO Guide No. 8: Guide to meteorological instruments and observation practices - Outlines methods for measuring climatological variables.
- CIE Information No. 3: Measurement of climatological data for daylighting studies.
Key descriptors for ISO 6243:1997 include: buildings, construction, structural design, climatic conditions, meteorological data, measurement, definitions, and symbols. This standard is invaluable for professionals aiming for consistency and accuracy in the use of climatic data in the building industry worldwide.
