May be used to measure the melting acharacteristics of petrolatums and other high viscosity petroleum waxes. Additional methods used are given in ISO 3841 and ISO 2207. Results obtained may differ, depending on the method used. For pharmaceutical petrolatum, the use of this procedure is usually preferred. In the annex, the specification for thermometers is given.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6244:1982 - Petroleum waxes and petrolatums - Determination of drop melting point is an international standard developed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization). This standard provides a precise method for determining the drop melting point of petroleum waxes and petrolatums, which is a crucial indicator of product performance and suitability for specific applications. The standardized procedure is particularly advantageous for assessing the melting characteristics of high-viscosity petroleum waxes and is especially preferred for pharmaceutical petrolatum.
Key Topics
- Drop Melting Point Measurement: The standard details a method where a thin film of wax is formed on the bulb of a thermometer. The temperature at which the wax becomes fluid enough to drop off is recorded as the drop melting point.
- Equipment Specifications: ISO 6244 outlines the necessary equipment, including test tubes, water bath, and specially specified thermometers (with details provided in the annex).
- Precision and Repeatability: The method includes provisions for both repeatability and reproducibility, enhancing confidence in quality control across laboratories and operators.
- Application Guidance: The standard notes that results may vary by method and references ISO 3841 for cooling curve melting point, and ISO 2207 for congealing point determination, highlighting its specific use-case for accurate drop melting point assessments.
- Reporting Requirements: Clear instructions are provided on the minimum information that must be included in test reports, ensuring traceability and compliance.
Applications
The application of ISO 6244:1982 benefits a broad range of industries reliant on petroleum waxes and petrolatums. Key use cases include:
- Quality Control: Ensuring production batches of waxes and petrolatum meet required specifications for melting behavior, crucial for industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and packaging.
- Product Development: Supporting R&D teams in formulating products with specific melting properties to suit end-use requirements, e.g., ointments or coatings.
- Regulatory Compliance: Providing laboratories with an internationally recognized procedure, simplifying audits and cross-border product certification.
- Pharmaceutical Petrolatum Testing: The standard is particularly suited for the assessment of pharmaceutical-grade petrolatum, supporting safety and efficacy.
- Inter-Laboratory Consistency: With precise protocol and defined thermometer specifications, organizations can achieve consistent, repeatable results across different sites and operators.
Related Standards
Several related ISO standards complement and provide alternative testing methods for petroleum waxes and petrolatums:
- ISO 3841: Petroleum waxes - Determination of melting point (cooling curve method). This alternative may offer different results based on sample characteristics and testing needs.
- ISO 2207: Petroleum waxes - Determination of congealing point. Useful for assessing other melting-related properties.
- ASTM 61C and IP 63C: Thermometers compliant with the specifications outlined in the annex of ISO 6244, ensuring accuracy in temperature measurements.
Practical Value
Implementing ISO 6244:1982 ensures a unified approach to measuring the drop melting point of petroleum waxes and petrolatums, supporting supply chain consistency, product safety, and international trade. By adhering to internationally recognized testing and reporting protocols, organizations improve both internal quality assurance and external stakeholder confidence in their products' performance characteristics.
