La présente partie de l'ISO 6293 prescrit une méthode par titrage potentiométrique pour le dosage des constituants des produits pétroliers qui sont saponifiés dans les conditions de l'essai. L'ISO 6293-1 prescrit une détermination par titrage avec indicateur coloré.La méthode est applicable aux produits dont l'indice de saponification est compris entre 2 mg KOH/g et 200 mg KOH/g.Les composés du soufre, du phosphore ou des halogènes, ainsi que certains autres produits interfèrent par réaction avec les bases ou les acides dans les conditions de l'essai.NOTES:1- Si on applique la méthode à des huiles moteur usagées, ou à des huiles contenant ces composés interférant comme additifs, il convient d'interpréter les résultats avec précaution, en gardant à l'esprit que les résultats peuvent être trop forts en raison de ces réactions parasites.2- Ces produits étrangers comportent certains acides organiques, ainsi que, pour la plupart, des savons non alcalins.L'odeur d'hydrogène sulfuré qui se dégage vers la fin du titrage en retour dans l'essai de saponification est une indication de la présence de certains types de composés sulfurés réactifs, tandis que les composés du chlore, du phosphore et d'autres matières susceptibles d'interférer sur le résultat, ne manifestent pas leur présence pendant l'essai. Une détermination gravimétrique de la quantité réelle d'acides gras est une des méthodes pour l'estimation de tels composés.
