This document specifies tests, procedures and a method of presenting the results concerning the parameters that define the main characteristics to be included in the supplier's literature of lubricators conforming to ISO 6301‑1. This document can be applied: — to facilitate the comparison of lubricators by standardizing test methods and presentation of test data; — to assist in the proper application of lubricators in compressed-air systems. The tests specified are intended to allow comparison between the different types of lubricators; they are not production tests to be carried out on each lubricator manufactured.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6301-2:2018 is an international standard developed by ISO that specifies test methods to determine the main characteristics of compressed-air lubricators used in pneumatic fluid power systems. This part of the ISO 6301 series complements ISO 6301-1 by defining standardized procedures to verify and present test results for lubricators, ensuring data consistency in supplier documentation. These lubricators introduce the necessary quantity of lubricant into compressed air streams to enhance system performance and longevity.
The standard applies tests focused on verifying rated pressure, airflow rates, minimum operating airflow, and reservoir capacity, offering a robust framework for comparing different lubricator designs. Importantly, these methods facilitate accurate product information for users and help optimize application within compressed-air systems.
Key Topics
-
Test Procedures for Rated Pressure Verification
ISO 6301-2 defines procedures to test lubricator pressure resistance, with pressures held up to four or five times the proposed rated pressure depending on materials. The test monitors for leaks, cracks, or failures ensuring product safety and reliability. -
Airflow Rate Testing
The document outlines how to measure pressure drops and airflow rates through lubricators accurately, using standard test circuits compliant with ISO 6358-1. Data is recorded at various inlet pressures (up to 10 bar or rated pressure) to assess performance under different operating conditions. -
Minimum Operating Airflow Determination
Two test options measure lubricant output at minimum airflow rates to verify lubricator efficiency. The methods include monitoring oil drop delivery in sight domes and weighing lubricant consumption, adjusting for recirculating and non-recirculating lubricators. -
Reservoir Capacity Measurement
Procedures are included to quantify lubricator reservoir capacities, ensuring proper lubricant volume listings in technical documentation. -
Standardized Presentation of Test Results
Results are to be presented in supplier literature uniformly, allowing easier comparison and aiding in the proper selection and application of lubricators within compressed-air systems.
Applications
ISO 6301-2:2018 serves multiple practical purposes in industries utilizing pneumatic fluid power, including:
-
Product Development and Quality Verification
Manufacturers use these test methods to verify product safety and performance claims prior to market release, ensuring compliance with international standards. -
Procurement and Supplier Comparison
Standardized test data helps procurement specialists compare lubricators objectively, choosing the best fit based on validated characteristics like flow rates and pressure capabilities. -
Maintenance and System Optimization
End-users and maintenance teams can reference standardized performance data to select lubricators that meet system requirements, improving equipment longevity and operational efficiency. -
Technical Documentation and Marketing
Engineers and technical writers rely on ISO 6301-2 to frame consistent supplier documentation that transparently reflects product capabilities.
