This part of ISO 6305 specifies the quality requirements of the product and the conditions of acceptance testing for sleepers. When the products are to be manufactured from flat plates, an alternative but equivalent specification may be agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer. Annex A includes the checking of dimensions and tolerances, annex B shows a check gauge for inclination of the rail seats, and annexes C and D contain progressive sampling plans.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6305-3:1983 - "Railway components - Technical delivery requirements - Part 3: Steel sleepers" defines the quality, manufacture and acceptance testing requirements for steel sleepers (railroad ties). First published in 1983, the standard covers material grades, manufacturing methods, marking, dimensional tolerances, finishing and the procedures for acceptance inspection and sampling. Annexes provide practical checking gauges and progressive sampling plans (Wald method).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and manufacture
- Sleepers may be produced from rolled sections or flat plates (an equivalent plate specification may be agreed between purchaser and manufacturer).
- Manufacturing includes cutting to length, hot or cold forming, and finishing to purchaser drawings.
- Steel quality
- Steel grades are specified in the standard; maximum sulphur and phosphorus content is 0.06%.
- Marking and traceability
- Compulsory marks include manufacturer ID and year of manufacture; optional marks (section symbol, cast ID) may be required.
- Working gauges (maximum/minimum) for dimensional checks should be produced and, if requested, stamped after purchaser approval. One set is made available to the receiving inspector.
- Dimensional tolerances and flatness
- Critical tolerances (examples from the standard): hole length/width tolerances +0.50 mm, distance between extreme fixing holes +1.5 mm, fixing-holes within the same rail seat ±0.75 mm.
- Rail bearing surfaces flatness shall not deviate by more than 0.5 mm (purchaser to specify convex/concave allowance).
- Annex A provides checking gauge diagrams for holes and distances; Annex B shows a gauge for rail-seat inclination.
- Mechanical tests and sampling
- Tensile and bend tests follow ISO 82 (tensile) and ISO 85 (bend). Test frequency: one tensile + one bend per cast ≤50 t, two each if cast >50 t.
- Bend mandrel diameter = 4 × sleeper thickness (minimum 50 mm); roller radius 25 mm.
- Sampling procedures reference ISO 2859; Annexes C and D include progressive (Wald) sampling plans and resubmission plans.
- Coatings and finish
- Protective coatings (tar or other agreed coatings) applied if specified in tender.
Applications
- Ensures consistent quality and interchangeability of steel sleepers used in ballasted and unballasted track systems.
- Used for contract/ procurement specifications, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and incoming inspection of rail components.
- Supports life-cycle reliability by specifying material, mechanical and dimensional controls.
Who uses this standard
- Railway infrastructure owners and operators
- Sleeper manufacturers and subcontractors
- Procurement and quality assurance engineers
- Test laboratories and receiving inspectors
