These panels of any species of wood are assemblies made from wood fingers of a parallelepiped rectangular shape, forming component squares laid in a chequered pattern; they are intended to be bonded (or sealed) to a supporting base, either directly or over an interlayer of adequate material. Specified are dimensions, permissible deviations, etc., the inspection and delivery conditions and marking.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 631:1975 specifies the general characteristics for mosaic parquet panels (parquet mosaïque). It defines the construction, nominal dimensions, permissible deviations, moisture requirements, inspection and delivery conditions, packaging and marking for preassembled single-layer panels made from rectangular wood lamellae arranged in a chequered (checkerboard) pattern. These panels are intended to be bonded or sealed to a supporting base, directly or over a suitable interlayer.
Keywords: ISO 631:1975, mosaic parquet panels, mosaic parquet, parquet mosaïque, flooring standard, dimensions, tolerances, moisture content, marking.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Construction
- Panels assembled from parallelepiped rectangular lamellae forming elementary squares in a checkerboard layout; lamellae can be of the same or different wood species and are preassembled either temporarily (e.g., paper) or permanently.
- Lamellae sawn on the back (dosse) must not exceed 30% of lamellae per panel.
- Nominal dimensions (examples given)
- Thickness options: 6, 8, 10 mm (6 mm is discouraged for resinous or very soft hardwoods).
- Width: 18–25 mm (preferred widths: 20, 22.4, 24, 25 mm).
- Length: 100–165 mm (preferred lengths: 100, 112, 120, 125 mm).
- Dimensional tolerances and squareness
- Tolerances for faces, edges and ends are specified in the standard (examples include thickness tolerance +0.2 mm, width +0.5 mm, diagonal tolerance +0.8 mm).
- Ends must be perpendicular to edges within a squareness tolerance of 0.4%.
- Up to 5% of lamellae per panel may show deviations up to twice the stated tolerances.
- Moisture content
- Delivery moisture: 8–13% (dry basis); reference moisture for dimensioning 11%.
- Humidity testing: electrical method preferred; gravimetric method is definitive in case of dispute.
- Inspection, acceptance and packaging
- Sampling and acceptance rules are provided (lot/sample sizes, defect limits).
- Packaging must protect panels and maintain specified moisture.
- Marking
- Required marking elements: the words “parquet mosaic” (mosaic parquet), wood species symbol per ISO/R 2036, nominal dimensions (thickness × width × length in mm), number of lamellae per elementary square, quality class symbol and reference to the applicable ISO number, and the number of panels per package. Country of origin/manufacturer may be added on request.
Applications and users
- Who uses ISO 631:1975:
- Flooring manufacturers and panel producers
- Importers/exporters and material suppliers
- QA/QC and testing laboratories
- Architects, specifiers and contractors selecting or specifying mosaic parquet flooring
- Procurement and compliance professionals requiring standardized documentation
- Practical value:
- Ensures dimensional interchangeability and quality control for mosaic parquet panels
- Supports consistent acceptance criteria for deliveries and reduces disputes
- Facilitates clear labeling for supply chain traceability
Related standards
- ISO/R 2036 - wood species marking/symbols (referenced for species coding)
- ISO 3247 - referenced in examples within ISO 631 for marking/verification practices
For procurement, manufacturing or testing of mosaic parquet panels, ISO 631:1975 provides essential specifications for consistent quality, inspection and marking of checkerboard-style wood flooring panels.
