Gives general guidance of keeping cereals. Other aspects of the storage of cereals and pulses are dealt with in ISO 6322-2 and ISAO 6322-3.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6322-1:1996 - Storage of cereals and pulses (Part 1: General recommendations for the keeping of cereals) provides high-level guidance on the routine keeping and handling of cereals in storage. It covers general principles to help preserve grain quality, minimize losses and support safe storage practices. The standard is the first part of a multipart guidance series; other aspects such as essential storage requirements and pest control are addressed in ISO 6322-2 and ISO 6322-3.
Key Topics
- General storage recommendations for cereals: practices to maintain grain condition during storage and handling.
- Moisture management: emphasis on monitoring and controlling moisture content as a primary factor affecting spoilage and quality.
- Adsorption–desorption isotherms (Annex A): illustrative plots showing the relationship between grain moisture content and air relative humidity for common cereals (wheat, barley, oats, maize, rice, peas, sorghum). Several curves are given (typically established at ~20–25 °C) with noted small variations at lower/higher temperatures (e.g., ≈+0.5 % at 15 °C and ≈−0.5 % at 35 °C).
- Reference methods and bibliography (Annex B): pointers to related ISO methods and standards for moisture determination, vocabulary, and procedures for detecting hidden insect infestation and pest control.
- Descriptors and scope: classification information relevant to agricultural products, grains, leguminous grains and general storage conditions.
Applications
ISO 6322-1 is practical for professionals involved in grain supply chains who need authoritative guidance on maintaining cereal quality:
- Grain storage and warehouse managers - to set routine monitoring and handling practices.
- Agronomists and post-harvest specialists - to plan drying, conditioning and storage strategies.
- Food safety and quality assurance teams - to integrate storage recommendations into quality management systems.
- Engineers and system designers - to inform design choices for ventilations, drying and environmental control systems.
- Policy makers and standards developers - to align local regulations or codes of practice with international recommendations.
Related Standards
- ISO 6322-2: essential requirements and additional storage aspects (see ISO 6322 series).
- ISO 6322-3: control of attack by pests and methods for detecting hidden infestation.
- Other referenced ISO standards cover moisture determination methods and cereal vocabulary, which support accurate measurement and consistent terminology.
Keywords: ISO 6322-1, storage of cereals, grain storage recommendations, moisture content, adsorption-desorption isotherms, relative humidity, cereal quality, pest control in grain storage.
