ISO 6360-3:2005 specifies the code numbers for specific characteristics of burs, finishing burs, cutters and surgical instruments, which refer to the type of toothing on the working part of the instrument. This three digit number appears in the locations 10 to 12 of the 15-digit overall number and forms the fourth group of three digits in the 15-digit overall number, the principles of which are explained in ISO 6360-1 and 6360-2. In addition to terms for rotary instruments and accessories used in two of the three official ISO languages (English, French and Russian), ISO 6360-3:2005 gives the equivalent terms in the German language; these are published under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6360-3:2005 - "Dentistry - Number coding system for rotary instruments - Part 3: Specific characteristics of burs and cutters" defines the code numbers used to describe the toothing (cutting geometry) of burs, finishing burs, cutters and related surgical rotary instruments. The three-digit code in this part occupies positions 10–12 of a 15-digit overall ISO 6360 identifier and forms the fourth group of the overall number. The numbers are generic designations intended to standardize communication about instrument tooth design, not to replace detailed product specifications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Code numbers that identify the type of toothing on the working part of rotary dental instruments (burs, finishing burs, cutters, surgical instruments).
- Coding position: These three digits form the fourth group in the 15-digit ISO 6360 code (see ISO 6360-1 and ISO 6360-2 for the complete coding system).
- Toothing characteristics captured:
- Type of instrument (bur, finishing bur, cutter, surgery instrument)
- Primary toothing: direction (straight, left/right helicoidal), cutting direction (left/right cutting), and grade of fineness (very fine → very coarse)
- Secondary toothing and features: crosscut (helicoidal), x‑cut (double/staggered cut), diamond cut, saw toothing; direction and fineness of secondary toothing
- Default rules: If unspecified, defaults are right cutting, medium fineness, and right crosscut.
- Language note: Terms are provided in ISO official languages (English, French, Russian); German equivalents are included by DIN but only official language terms are ISO terms.
- Examples in the standard: Burs are coded in a defined range (e.g., codes 001–023 for various bur tooth types) and similar tables exist for finishing burs and cutters.
Practical applications
- Standardized product cataloguing and clear product descriptions for manufacturers, distributors, and dental suppliers.
- Improved procurement, inventory management, and cross-border trade by using a universal numeric identifier for tooth geometry.
- Simplified technical communication between dentists/clinicians, laboratory technicians and manufacturers when specifying instrument performance (cutting direction, fineness, crosscut).
- Useful for regulatory submissions, quality management, and harmonized product classification in sales literature.
Who uses this standard
- Dental instrument manufacturers and designers
- Product cataloguers and procurement officers
- Dental laboratories and clinicians specifying tools
- Regulators and standards bodies involved in medical device classification
