ISO 6383-1:2015 specifies a method of determining the tear resistance of plastic film or sheet less than 1 mm thick, in the form of standard trouser-shaped test specimens, tested under defined conditions of pre-treatment, temperature, humidity, and speed of testing. The method is applicable to film and sheeting of both flexible and rigid materials, provided that the material is not so rigid that brittle fracture occurs during the test, or so deformable, in an irreversible way, that the energy used in the deformation of the specimen legs is significant (i.e. is not negligible) with respect to the energy used in tearing. The method may not be suitable for determining the tear properties of cellular sheet and film.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6383-1:2015 is an internationally recognized standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a precise method for determining the tear resistance of plastic films and sheets less than 1 mm thick using the trouser tear method. This standard is essential for evaluating the durability and quality of both flexible and rigid plastic films under controlled environmental and testing conditions such as temperature, humidity, and testing speed. It establishes a repeatable procedure to measure tear resistance, which is critical for manufacturers and quality control laboratories striving to ensure optimum performance of plastic materials.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: The standard applies to plastics in film or sheet form under 1 mm thickness, including flexible and rigid materials without brittle fracture or irreversible deformation during testing. It excludes cellular plastics where tear properties may not be accurately assessed using this method.
- Test Specimen Preparation: Specimens are cut into a standardized trouser shape with a central slit of 75 mm length, ensuring smooth edges free of nicks to avoid erroneous tear results. Anisotropic materials require tests in multiple directions to assess tear resistance comprehensively.
- Testing Conditions: Specimens must be conditioned typically at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity, aligning with ISO 291 standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing. Testing speeds permitted are 200 mm/min or 250 mm/min, with careful control to ensure consistent, comparable results.
- Apparatus Requirements: A tensile testing machine capable of constant grip separation speed and equipped with autographic recording for load vs. time data is mandatory. Grips must secure the specimen legs firmly without slippage. Thickness measurement follows ISO 4593 or ISO 4591 for embossed films.
- Test Procedure: During the test, the tearing force is recorded as the specimen tears along the slit. Load values recorded during the initial and final portions of tearing are disregarded, focusing on the stable plateau region to calculate an average tearing force. Tear resistance is computed by dividing the tearing force by specimen thickness.
- Reporting: Test reports include material identification, test parameters, number of specimens tested, mean tear resistance, individual results, conditioning atmosphere, and any deviations or influencing factors, enabling clear communication and verification of results.
Applications
ISO 6383-1:2015 is widely used for:
- Quality Control and Acceptance Testing: Ensuring plastic films and sheets meet predefined tear resistance specifications during production and before delivery.
- Material Development and Research: Comparing tear properties of new formulations or production techniques under consistent test parameters.
- Product Specification Compliance: Verifying conformity of packaging films, industrial sheeting, agricultural films, and other plastic products to customer or regulatory standards.
- Performance Evaluation: Assessing material suitability and durability in end-use conditions such as mechanical stress and handling resistance.
This standard supports industries including packaging, automotive, agriculture, electronics, and consumer goods where plastic film integrity is critical.
Related Standards
To fully implement ISO 6383-1:2015 and ensure standardized testing conditions, the following related ISO standards are referenced:
- ISO 291: Plastics - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing, which defines temperature and humidity conditions for specimen preparation.
- ISO 4591: Plastics - Determination of average thickness of film or sheeting by gravimetric techniques, applicable for embossed films.
- ISO 4593: Plastics - Determination of thickness by mechanical scanning, used for measuring uniform film thickness.
- ISO 527-3: Plastics - Determination of tensile properties - Part 3: Test conditions for films and sheets, pertains to tensile testing machines and procedures relevant for tear resistance testing.
- ISO 6383-2: Plastics - Film and sheeting - Determination of tear resistance - Part 2: Elmendorf method, an alternative test method for tear resistance measurement.
By aligning testing practices with ISO 6383-1:2015 and its related standards, manufacturers and testing laboratories ensure reliable, repeatable, and internationally comparable tear resistance data for plastic films and sheets.
