This document specifies safety requirements for rechargeable energy storage systems (RESS) of electrically propelled road vehicles for the protection of persons. It does not provide the comprehensive safety information for the manufacturing, maintenance and repair personnel. NOTE 1 Requirements for motorcycles and mopeds are specified in ISO 13063 and ISO 18243. NOTE 2 Additional safety requirements can apply for RESS that can be recharged by means different from supplying electric energy (e.g. redox flow battery).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6469-1:2019 - "Electrically propelled road vehicles - Safety specifications - Part 1: Rechargeable energy storage system (RESS)" defines safety requirements and test procedures for rechargeable energy storage systems used in electrically propelled road vehicles. The standard is focused on protection of persons and covers RESS design and performance requirements and associated test methods. It is a general safety standard applicable to multiple RESS chemistries (including lithium‑ion characteristics introduced in this edition) but does not replace comprehensive occupational safety guidance for manufacturing, maintenance or repair personnel.
Key Topics
- Scope and intent: Safety requirements for RESS of electrically propelled road vehicles to protect occupants and bystanders; excludes detailed guidance for workshop/repair personnel.
- General requirements: Electrical safety principles and overall safety measures expected of RESS designs.
- Technical requirements:
- Mechanical: Robustness against vibration, shock and mechanical damage.
- Climatic: Thermal shock cycling and environmental durability.
- Simulated vehicle accidents: Defined tests for vehicle crash scenarios, immersion in water and exposure to fire.
- Electrical: Isolation resistance, clearance and creepage distances, short‑circuit protection and related electrical safeguards.
- Functional: Overcharge protection, overdischarge protection and protection against internal overheating.
- Emissions: Requirements for limiting release of hazardous gases and substances during normal and fault conditions.
- Test procedures: Detailed procedures for mechanical, climatic, simulated accident, electrical short‑circuit and functional tests, including preconditioning and post‑test observations.
- Terminology and definitions: Standardized definitions for terms such as RESS, isolation resistance, live part, clearance, creepage, etc.
Applications and users
ISO 6469-1 is used by:
- EV manufacturers (OEMs) designing and validating battery packs and energy storage subsystems.
- Component and subsystem suppliers developing RESS modules, battery enclosures and BMS features.
- Test laboratories performing certification, type‑approval and safety testing for electric vehicles and RESS.
- Regulatory bodies and certification agencies assessing compliance with road‑vehicle safety requirements.
- Safety engineers and system integrators specifying and verifying electrical, mechanical and thermal protection measures.
Practical uses include guiding battery pack design, defining test programs for crash/fire/immersion scenarios, establishing requirements for isolation monitoring and protective functions such as overcharge/discharge cut‑outs.
