Specifies a procedure for approximating a volume of a typical material carried in the bowl of an elevating scraper. The volumes are based on the inside dimensions of the bowl and a representative volume on top of the bowl. The method is intended to provide a consistent means of comparing capacities; it is not intended to define actual capacities that might be observed in any specific application.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6484:1986 specifies a repeatable procedure for approximating the volume of material carried in the bowl of an elevating scraper. The method derives volumes from the inside dimensions of the bowl plus a representative top (heaped) volume and is intended to provide a consistent means of comparing capacities across machines and configurations. It is explicitly not intended to predict actual field capacities for specific site conditions.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Establishes a standardized volumetric rating method for elevating scrapers to enable consistent comparison between models and manufacturers.
- Positioning of the bowl: The bowl floor should be horizontal (or as near horizontal as possible). Discharge and elevating mechanisms are positioned to give maximum volumetric capacity while respecting manufacturer specifications.
- Boundaries of the struck volume: Defined by the interior surfaces of the bowl sides, the rear interior surface or ejector, the bowl floor and reference planes related to the cutting edge and elevator idler/flight paths (see figures referenced in the standard).
- Boundaries of the top (heaped) volume: Defined using the upper surface of the struck volume plus planes related to elevator flight tips, tangential planes from the rear of the bowl, and mean lines. Typical boundary slopes referenced include 3:1 (≈18.4°) and 1:1 (45°) where applicable.
- Rated volume expression: The rated volume is the sum of the struck and top (heaped) volumes. Published volumetric ratings must be within ±3% of the value determined by the procedure. Rounding conventions: volumes < 10 m³ reported to 0.1 m³; volumes ≥ 10 m³ to 0.5 m³.
- Exclusions: Local discontinuities such as gussets and supporting arms in the bowl are ignored when determining these volumes.
Applications
This standard is practical for stakeholders who need consistent, comparable scraper capacity data, including:
- Manufacturers producing specification sheets and technical ratings
- Equipment specifiers and purchasers comparing models for procurement
- Designers and engineers who size fleets or plan earthworks
- Test engineers establishing repeatable laboratory or factory ratings
By using ISO 6484:1986, organizations reduce ambiguity in capacity reporting and ensure that volumetric ratings are comparable across different elevating scrapers and manufacturers.
