This document specifies requirements for dimensions, sectional properties and tolerances for hot-rolled sections as follows: equal angle LE (L section); unequal angle LU (L section); sloping flange channel US (U section); sloping flange I beam IS(I section). This document is used together with technical delivery conditions especially, but is not limited, ISO 630-1, ISO 630-2, ISO 630-3, ISO 630-5 and ISO 630-6.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 657-1:2026 - "Hot-rolled steel sections - Dimensions, sectional properties and tolerances - Part 1: Angles, sloping flange channels and sloping flange beams" - is an international standard developed by ISO that specifies essential requirements for hot-rolled steel sections. This part of the ISO 657 series focuses specifically on the standardization of dimensions, sectional properties, and tolerances for four major types of steel sections:
- Equal angles (LE)
- Unequal angles (LU)
- Sloping flange channels (US)
- Sloping flange I beams (IS)
This standard is intended for use in conjunction with appropriate technical delivery standards, particularly ISO 630 series, to provide a comprehensive reference for both manufacturers and procurers of hot-rolled steel sections worldwide.
Key Topics
ISO 657-1:2026 covers several critical aspects of hot-rolled steel section specification, including:
- Dimensional Standards: Clear definitions of standard dimensions for various steel profiles, including measurement methods, designation system, and profiles (L, U, and I sections with sloping flanges).
- Sectional Properties: Provision of informative tables (Annex A) listing sectional area, nominal mass, and key calculated properties such as radius of gyration, modulus of section, and positions of center of gravity.
- Tolerance Specifications: Detailed permissible deviations for length, width, thickness, squareness, flatness, and straightness, ensuring consistent quality and compatibility in structural applications.
- Designation System: Standardized approach to designating steel sections, ensuring clarity during ordering and communication between manufacturers and stakeholders.
- Surface Condition: Stipulation that surface quality must conform to ISO 20723 requirements.
Applications
Adoption of ISO 657-1:2026 brings substantial value to several stakeholders in the steel and construction industries by:
- Enabling Interchangeability: Standardized dimensions and tolerances ensure that hot-rolled steel sections produced in different locations or by different manufacturers can be used interchangeably in construction projects worldwide.
- Facilitating Structural Design: Accurate sectional properties support engineers in the selection, analysis, and use of steel sections for load-bearing and structural integrity considerations.
- Streamlining Procurement and Quality Assurance: With global compatibility, purchasers can specify and obtain consistent and reliable steel products, minimizing disputes and rework.
- Supporting Compliance and Safety: By ensuring steel sections meet internationally recognized standards, organizations can more easily demonstrate compliance in regulated markets.
- Serving as a Reference Document: Widely used by architects, engineers, manufacturers, and inspectors for technical reference, specification writing, and project planning.
Common sectors leveraging this standard include:
- Civil and industrial construction (buildings, bridges, towers)
- Manufacturing of steel frames, supports, and heavy machinery
- Infrastructure and transport (railways, ports, warehouses)
Related Standards
ISO 657-1:2026 relies on and complements several related international standards, forming a comprehensive framework for steel product specification and delivery:
- ISO 630-1, ISO 630-2, ISO 630-3, ISO 630-5, ISO 630-6: Standards for technical delivery conditions of different types of structural steels.
- ISO 6929: Steel products vocabulary for harmonized terminology.
- ISO 20723: Defines acceptable surface conditions for hot-rolled structural steel sections.
- Other National/Regional Standards: ISO 657-1 allows, by agreement, for dimensions and tolerances to reference regional standards such as EN 10056, EN 10024, EN 10365, JIS G 3192, and GB/T 706 for enhanced flexibility and market compatibility.
ISO 657-1:2026 thus serves as a critical reference for standardizing hot-rolled steel section properties globally, fostering efficiency, interoperability, and consistent quality across structural steel applications.
