Specifies the essential dimensional features of S-, G-, D- and DV-oil control piston ring types. The normal range for the axial width of oil control rings (2,5 to 8 mm inclusive) is divided into 0,5 or 1,0 mm increments. Applies to oil control rings up to and including 200 mm diameter for reciprocating internal combustion piston engines and may also be used for piston rings for compressors working under similar conditions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6625:1986 specifies the essential dimensional features for S-, G-, D-, and DV-type oil control piston rings used in reciprocating internal combustion engines. The standard defines a comprehensive range for the axial width of oil control rings, spanning from 2.5 mm to 8 mm in 0.5 or 1.0 mm increments, and covers oil control rings up to 200 mm in diameter. While primarily developed for internal combustion piston engines, these specifications can also be applied to compressors operating under similar conditions.
Adherence to ISO 6625:1986 ensures consistency in piston ring design, facilitating quality manufacturing, reliable performance, and compatibility within the global supply chain for automotive and industrial engine applications.
Key Topics
- Ring Types: Covers four main types of oil control piston rings:
- S-type: Slotted oil control rings
- G-type: Double-bevelled oil control rings
- D-type: Bevelled-edge oil control rings
- DV-type: Bevelled-edge V-groove oil control rings (applicable to 4 mm ring widths)
- Dimensional Characteristics: Specifies essential dimensions such as axial width, radial wall thickness, slot width, groove depth, land width, and closed gap dimensions.
- Sizing and Ranges: Axial widths are standardized for improved interchangeability and quality control.
- Designation System: Provides example nomenclature for designating oil control rings by type, dimensions, material, and specific features.
- Force Factors: Addresses tangential and diametral forces and correction factors based on material properties and ring features.
- Common Features: Details on slot arrangements, inside chamfered edges (KI), and applicable tolerances for each ring type.
Applications
The ISO 6625:1986 standard is widely applicable in sectors that rely on efficient, reliable internal combustion engines, ensuring optimized engine performance, durability, and reduced oil consumption. Key uses include:
- Automotive Industry: Standardized piston rings support consistent quality and interoperability in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, and motorcycles.
- Industrial Engines: Facilitates reliable operation in stationary engines used for power generation, pumps, and other mechanical systems.
- Compressors: The specified dimensions and types are also suitable for piston rings in air and gas compressors working under conditions similar to reciprocating engines.
- Aftermarket Manufacturing: Ensures compatibility and quality in replacement parts for repair and maintenance, supporting global supply chains.
- Engine Design and Engineering: Helps engine designers select appropriate oil control rings tailored to operational requirements and enhance engine longevity.
Related Standards
ISO 6625:1986 is part of a comprehensive series of ISO standards focused on piston rings for internal combustion engines. Relevant related standards include:
- ISO 6621: Covers piston ring vocabulary, measuring principles, material specifications, general specifications, and quality requirements.
- ISO 6622: Addresses rectangular rings and rings with narrow widths.
- ISO 6623: Specifies scraper rings for internal combustion engines.
- ISO 6624: Describes keystone and half-keystone piston rings.
- ISO 6626: Deals with coil spring loaded oil control rings.
- ISO 1101: Relates to tolerancing of form, orientation, location, and run-out in technical drawings.
Practical Value
By establishing standardized dimensional features and designation criteria, ISO 6625:1986 ensures high levels of quality, performance, and interchangeability for oil control piston rings in internal combustion engines. This supports global manufacturing efficiency, streamlined maintenance procedures, and assures end-users of reliable engine operation, reduced oil consumption, and extended engine life.
