Specifies the marking system recommended to the manufacturer so as to reduce risks of incompatibility between components of bicycles produced according to new ISO Standards and traditional components. This problem of selection of the appropriate component will make itself felt above all at the level of the repair of bicycles and the distribution of spare parts; it will be necessary for this distinguishing mark to be universal, standardized and practical.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6692:1981, titled Cycles - Marking of Cycle Components, is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard specifies a universal system for marking bicycle components to reduce the risk of incompatibility between parts manufactured according to new ISO standards and traditional components. The marking system is essential for ensuring the correct selection and compatibility of spare parts, especially during bicycle repair and maintenance.
By establishing a standardized and practical marking convention, ISO 6692 helps manufacturers, distributors, and repair professionals identify and match components accurately across different thread and sizing systems. This standard was developed in response to the coexistence of the metric system and the British Standard Cycle (BSC) thread system, which have historically caused compatibility challenges.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
ISO 6692 targets the clarification and differentiation of bicycle components that use either metric or BSC thread standards. It applies to various cycle parts such as freewheels, hubs, bottom bracket cups, axles, cranks, pedals, and handlebar stems. -
Marking System
The standard defines symbols and markings that manufacturers must place directly on components and packaging for clear identification:- Metric threads are marked with an "M" followed by the diameter and pitch in millimeters (e.g., M35x1).
- BSC (inch) threads are marked with a "B" followed by diameter in inches and threads per inch (e.g., B1.375x24).
- Variations accommodate different surface space availability – from full detailed markings when space allows, to simplified markings when space is limited.
-
Design Requirements
The marking:- Must be universal and understandable worldwide,
- Standardized to ensure consistency across manufacturers,
- Practical by being easy to apply and clearly visible on all relevant bicycle components.
-
Compatibility Considerations
This standard addresses the incompatibility risk between the metric and BSC systems which are not interchangeable. Without clear marking, mismatched components can lead to mechanical failure or damage.
Applications
ISO 6692 is primarily useful for:
-
Bicycle Manufacturers
Ensuring components are labeled properly to assist compatibility in assembly and avoid customer confusion. -
Repair Shops and Technicians
Quickly identifying the thread systems and sizes of components to order or fit correct replacement parts. -
Spare Parts Distributors
Simplifying inventory management and preventing shipment errors by clearly marking products. -
International Trade and Standardization
Facilitating worldwide harmonization of bicycle component specifications to reduce market fragmentation.

ISO 6698 - Cycles: Screw threads used to assemble freewheels on bicycle hubs
This related draft standard complements ISO 6692 by focusing specifically on thread specifications for freewheel assembly, supporting the broader goal of component compatibility. -
Additional ISO standards in the cycles category may cover safety, frame dimensions, or performance that collectively help maintain uniformity and quality in bicycle production.
ISO 6692:1981 serves as a foundational guideline for the marking and identification of bicycle components, enabling safer, more efficient repairs, maintenance, and cross-border commerce. Adopting this international standard reduces the risk of mechanical incompatibility and fosters confidence among bicycle users and professionals worldwide.
