ISO 6897:1984 provides guidelines for evaluating the human response to low-frequency horizontal motion (0.063 to 1 Hz) of fixed structures - primarily buildings and seabed-founded off‑shore platforms. The standard focuses on whole‑body perception and subjective response (alarm, intrusion, interference with tasks) rather than structural damage or injury. It gives recommended r.m.s. acceleration magnitudes for use in assessing occupant response to wind‑ or wave‑induced motion, with specific guidance for storm events (notably 10‑minute peak intervals and a 5‑year return period reference).
