This document specifies test procedures and a method of presenting the results concerning the parameters which define the main characteristics to be included in the literature from suppliers of regulators and filter-regulators conforming to ISO 6953-1. The purpose of this document is to: — facilitate the comparison of pressure regulators and filter-regulators by standardizing test methods and presentation of test data; — assist in the proper application of pressure regulators and filter-regulators in compressed air systems. The tests specified are intended to allow comparison among the different types of regulators and filter-regulators; they are not production tests to be carried out on each pressure regulator or filter-regulator manufactured. ISO 6953-3 can be used as an alternative dynamic test method for flow-rate characteristics using an isothermal tank instead of a flow meter. However, this method measures only the decreasing flow rate part of the hysteresis curve of forward flow and relief flow characteristics. NOTE The tests related to electro-pneumatic pressure control valves are specified in ISO 10094−2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6953-2:2024 - "Pneumatic fluid power - Compressed air pressure regulators and filter-regulators - Part 2" specifies standardized test methods and a presentation format for the main characteristics that suppliers must include in product literature for pressure regulators and filter-regulators (conforming to ISO 6953-1). Its aim is to enable direct comparison of device performance and to assist correct application of compressed air pressure regulators in pneumatic systems.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard defines test procedures, conditions and calculation methods for parameters that typically appear in supplier datasheets. Major technical topics include:
- Test conditions: gas supply, temperature, pressures and inlet/test (regulated) pressure setup.
- Flow characteristics tests:
- Test installation and general requirements for measuring flow-rate vs regulated pressure.
- Procedures for forward flow rate-pressure and relief flow rate-pressure characteristics.
- Calculation of flow rate-pressure curves, hysteresis and maximum (sonic) conductance for forward and relief flow.
- Pressure regulation test: verified using defined test circuits and procedures.
- Pilot-operated regulator tests: maximum air consumption at null forward/relief flow for regulators with air bleed.
- Special tests:
- Pilot pressure vs regulated pressure for external pilot-operated regulators.
- Output resolution for manual and pressure-pilot regulators.
- Sensitivity and repeatability tests (including detailed repeatability procedures for manual and pilot regulators).
- Presentation of data: standardized formats for flow and pressure regulation characteristics, air consumption and additional attributes to include in supplier literature.
Note: ISO 6953-3 is referenced as an alternative dynamic test method (isothermal tank) for certain flow-rate characteristics but measures only the decreasing portion of hysteresis. Electro-pneumatic valve tests are covered under ISO 10094‑2.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 6953-2:2024 is intended for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers preparing product datasheets and performance literature for pressure regulators and filter-regulators.
- Test laboratories and QA teams implementing standardized test procedures for comparative data.
- System designers, OEMs and specification writers selecting regulators for industrial compressed air systems.
- Maintenance and reliability engineers evaluating replacement components and system behavior under varying flow and pressure conditions.
Using this standard helps ensure consistent, comparable performance data for better component selection and system design.
