This document specifies graphical symbols for the purposes of public information. This document is generally applicable to public information symbols in all locations and all sectors where the public has access. However, it is not applicable to safety signs or those sectors subject to specific regulations (e.g. traffic signs on public roads). This document specifies the original symbols that can be scaled for reproduction and application purposes. The symbols can be used in conjunction with text to improve comprehension.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7001:2023 - "Graphical symbols - Registered public information symbols" is the international standard that defines a library of standardized public information symbols (graphical symbols) for use in public spaces and services. The fourth edition updates and expands the symbol set (including a new Accessibility (AC) category), and specifies how symbols should be reproduced, scaled and combined with text to support clear, language-independent communication. ISO 7001 is intended for wayfinding, signage and public information systems, but does not apply to safety signs or regulated sectors such as traffic signs on public roads.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Symbol set and categorization: Symbols are organized into categories (PF - public facilities, TF - transport facilities, TC - tourism/culture, SA - sporting activities, CF - commercial facilities, BP - behaviour of the public, AC - accessibility). Each symbol has a reference number and meaning.
- Reproducibility and scaling: Symbols are designed to be scaled for small to large applications (orientation notices, maps, large wayfinding signs) while preserving key design elements.
- Text and combination use: Symbols are intended to be understood on their own but may be combined with text to improve comprehension, especially for new or less familiar symbols.
- Arrows and directional use: The direction arrow (PI PF 030) must be used only in conjunction with another symbol (or symbol + text) to indicate movement toward a facility; other arrow uses are specified with their symbols.
- Colour and contrast: Symbols may be reproduced in any colour, but combinations that mimic safety colours/shapes (see ISO 3864-1) should be avoided to prevent confusion with safety signage. Adequate contrast and minimum surrounding area are required for legibility.
- Negation rules: Provisions for negating symbols include a diagonal negation bar (top-left to bottom-right, no surrounding circle) or a cross over an element. Negation marks are normally red and must not obscure critical symbol details.
- Validation and comprehension: Symbols are validated through testing and international use (ISO 9186 referenced for evaluation techniques). All symbols are maintained in the ISO Online Browsing Platform (OBP).
Practical applications and typical users
Who uses ISO 7001:
- Signage designers and manufacturers
- Architects, urban planners and facility managers
- Transportation and airport operators (non-traffic signage)
- Museums, tourism and cultural venues
- Accessibility specialists and inclusion planners
- ISO technical committees creating industry-specific symbols
Typical applications:
- Wayfinding systems in airports, stations, hospitals and public buildings
- Maps, guides, kiosks and digital interfaces
- Directional and facility signage (toilets, ATMs, baggage, baby care, accessible facilities)
- International venues where language-neutral communication improves comprehension
