This document specifies the apparatus and the analytical methods for determining the in-can total formaldehyde content in water-dilutable coating materials, where the main sources of formaldehyde are in-can preservatives. This document is also applicable to polymer dispersions.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 7012-2:2025 (Paints and varnishes)
ISO 7012-2:2025 specifies laboratory methods for the determination of in‑can total formaldehyde in water‑dilutable coating materials (including polymer dispersions) where formaldehyde originates mainly from in‑can preservatives. The standard defines required apparatus, reagents, a steam‑distillation extraction step and a photometric determination after derivatization with chromotropic acid (CHRA) to quantify both free and bound formaldehyde released during acidic water‑steam distillation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Targets water‑dilutable coating materials and polymer dispersions where in‑can preservatives are formaldehyde sources.
- Analytical principle:
- Acidic water‑steam‑distillation to release free and bound formaldehyde (in‑can total formaldehyde).
- Derivatization with chromotropic acid (CHRA) to form a colored complex measurable photometrically (absorption maximum at 578 nm).
- Apparatus: Typical laboratory equipment plus specialised steam‑distillation apparatus (commercial examples such as Vapodest 20 s are referenced), spectrophotometer capable of 578 nm, filtration and volumetric glassware.
- Reagents: Demineralized water (ISO 3696 grade 1), formaldehyde solutions and stock standards, sulfuric acid, CHRA disodium salt dihydrate and prepared CHRA solution. Titration reagents for standard verification (see Annex A).
- Procedure elements: Sampling, distillation, CHRA derivatization, calibration, analysis and calculation of in‑can total formaldehyde content.
- Quality metrics: Precision statements including repeatability (r) and reproducibility (R) limits; requirements for calibration and test reporting.
- Annexes: Annex A - titration methods for formaldehyde standard (iodometric and pH‑value methods); Annex B - interlaboratory test results.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Paint and varnish manufacturers for product quality control and formulation verification.
- Analytical and conformity testing laboratories assessing preservative levels, shelf‑life risks and product safety.
- R&D teams developing water‑based coatings or switching preservative systems.
- Regulatory and compliance bodies monitoring formaldehyde content for labeling and safety requirements.
Practical uses include routine QC assays, validation of preservative dosing, and investigation of formaldehyde release from depot substances.
