ISO 702-1:2009 specifies the sizes for interchangeability of conical spindle noses and corresponding connecting faces of face plates or work holding chucks.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 702-1:2009 - Machine tools - Connecting dimensions of spindle noses and workholding chucks - Part 1: Conical connection - specifies the sizes and tolerances required for interchangeability between conical spindle noses and the corresponding connecting faces of face plates or workholding chucks. This part of ISO 702 defines standardized connecting dimensions, bolt circles, fixing-hole patterns and fits to ensure compatible mounting across manufacturers and regions. All dimensions and tolerances are expressed in millimetres.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose: Defines sizes for interchangeability of conical spindle noses and mating face plates/workholding chucks (size numbers No. 3–28).
- Dimensional tables: Detailed tables list nominal diameters (d), bolt-circle diameters, axial lengths and other key dimensions for each size. Example nominal d values include 53.975 mm, 63.513 mm, 82.563 mm, up to 584.225 mm.
- Tolerances and fits: Tolerance classes (e.g., H8/h8 for some fits), plus general tolerance guidance (untoleranced dimensions ±0.4 mm).
- Bolt circles and fixing holes: Definitions for inner and outer bolt circles, fixing-screw sizes and positions (Type A arrangements and Type 1/Type 2 connecting face variants).
- Metric / inch interchangeability: Tables permit interchangeability between metric and inch-based chucks - compromise dimensions and notes are provided to accommodate both systems.
- Type identification: Face plates and chucks should be marked with the connection type to ensure correct matching.
Applications
ISO 702-1 is intended for use where reliable, repeatable mechanical connections are critical:
- Machine tool OEMs specifying spindle noses and mounting interfaces.
- Chuck and face-plate manufacturers designing to standardized connecting dimensions.
- Fixture and tooling designers ensuring compatibility between workholding devices and spindles.
- Maintenance and retrofit teams replacing chucks or upgrading spindles while preserving interchangeability.
- Purchasing and quality assurance teams verifying supplier parts conform to international machine tool standards.
Benefits include improved interchangeability of spare parts, reduced machine downtime, simplified procurement and global compatibility of workholding systems.
