This International Standard specifies requirements and test methods for foam proportioning equipment of fixed foam extinguishing systems for indoor or outdoor use or both.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7076-1:2012 - Fire protection - Foam fire extinguishing systems - Part 1: Foam proportioning equipment specifies requirements and test methods for proportioning devices used in fixed foam extinguishing systems for indoor or outdoor use. The standard defines construction, material, performance and durability criteria to ensure reliable mixing of foam concentrate into the water flow at a predetermined proportioning ratio.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and definitions
- Describes foam proportioning equipment (balanced pressure proportioners, bladder tanks, inline eductors, pump proportioners) and the meaning of working pressure and proportioning ratio.
- Connections and fastenings
- Materials and corrosion resistance
- Metal parts exposed to foam concentrate/solution must resist corrosion; moving parts should be corrosion-resistant (bronze cited as typical).
- Elastomeric joint rings required to meet ISO 4633 Type W.
- Plastic and resin components
- Essential plastic/reinforced resin parts must demonstrate resistance to ageing and liquid exposure (retention of ≥50% tensile/impact/elongation, no cracking).
- Strength and leakage
- Pressure-retaining equipment must withstand hydrostatic pressure of 4× maximum working pressure (5 min).
- Leak resistance: withstand 1.5× maximum working pressure for 5 min without leakage.
- Performance
- Measured proportioning ratio must be ≥ rated concentration and ≤ 1.3× rated (or +1 percentage point, whichever is less).
- Pressure loss deviations limited to −10% to 0% of manufacturer-stated value.
- Durability & environmental tests
- Test methods include ageing, liquid exposure, pressurization, leak, proportioning ratio, pressure loss, operation reliability, water flow, stress corrosion, salt-spray (ISO 9227), light and water exposure (xenon arc per ASTM G155), with detailed procedures and tolerances.
- Marking and documentation
- Manufacturer marking and installation/operation instructions are required.
Applications and users
ISO 7076-1:2012 is intended for:
- Manufacturers and designers of foam proportioning equipment and fixed foam systems
- Fire protection engineers and system integrators specifying reliable foam delivery
- Test laboratories performing conformity and durability testing
- Procurement and compliance teams verifying equipment meets international fire protection standards
Practical benefits include predictable foam concentrate dosing, verified resistance to environmental and chemical exposure, and documented mechanical safety under pressure.
