This document specifies a test method for the release of lead and cadmium from glass hollowware that is intended to be used in contact with food. This document is applicable to glass hollowware intended for use in the preparation, cooking, serving and storage of food and beverages, excluding glass ceramic ware and glass flatware. This document is also applicable to glass articles used for packaging in the food industry.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7086-1:2019 - Glass hollowware in contact with food - Release of lead and cadmium - Part 1: Test method specifies a laboratory test method to determine the release (leaching) of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) from glass hollowware intended to contact food and beverages. The standard applies to items used for preparation, cooking, serving, storage and packaging (excluding glass ceramic ware and glass flatware). It defines the extraction conditions, sampling, analytical approaches and reporting necessary to assess metal migration from glassware surfaces.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: Clarifies terms such as glass hollowware (internal depth > 25 mm), categories by volume (small, large, storage) and the “drinking rim” (20 mm section from the upper edge).
- Extraction procedure: Uses a 4% (v/v) acetic acid test solution to extract lead and cadmium from surfaces. Typical extraction duration is (24 ± 0.5) h at (22 ± 2) °C; for certain articles a (2 ± 0.1) h procedure may apply as defined in Part 2.
- Sampling and specimen preparation: Specifies sample size, preparation and preservation to ensure reproducible leaching results.
- Analytical methods: ICP–MS is the reference technique for trace and ultra-trace measurement of Pb and Cd. FAAS is retained as an alternative; Annexes provide validated methods for ICP–MS (Annex A), FAAS (Annex B) and ICP‑OES (Annex C). Other validated methods (e.g., GFAAS) may be used if appropriate for the expected release levels.
- Calculation and reporting: Procedures for calculating mass release per unit surface area and reporting test results are described; a formal test report is required.
- Safety and competence: The standard warns about hazardous materials and stresses testing by suitably qualified personnel.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses ISO 7086-1:2019: Manufacturers of glass bottles, jars, cookware and food packaging; quality control and compliance laboratories; product safety engineers; regulatory bodies and third‑party testing organizations.
- Why it matters: Ensures consumer safety by quantifying Pb and Cd migration from glass surfaces, supports regulatory compliance, harmonizes test methods across markets and reduces trade barriers for food-contact glassware.
- Typical use cases: Incoming quality control, pre‑market product testing, conformity assessment against regulatory limits (see ISO 7086-2 for limit-setting and repeated‑use tests).
