This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the ester value of an essential oil. This method is not applicable to essential oils containing lactones or an appreciable proportion of aldehydes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 709:2001 specifies a laboratory method for the determination of the ester value (ester index) of essential oils. The standard defines an analytical titration procedure-based on hydrolysis (saponification) of esters followed by back-titration of excess alkali-that quantifies the milligrams of KOH required to neutralize acids released by ester hydrolysis per gram of essential oil. Note: this method is to essential oils containing lactones or an appreciable proportion of aldehydes.
