This document specifies surface finish requirements for the articulating surfaces of total and partial knee joint prostheses classified in ISO 7207-1. This document is intended to provide guidance for periodic validation of production processes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7207-2:2025, "Implants for surgery - Components for partial and total knee joint prostheses - Part 2", defines surface finish requirements for the articulating surfaces of total and partial knee joint prostheses. It is intended to support periodic validation of production processes and to ensure consistent tribological performance and longevity of components made from metal, ceramic and plastics.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to articulating surfaces of femoral, tibial and patella components classified in ISO 7207-1.
- Reference methods: Surface texture measurement principles and procedures are given by ISO 21920-2 and ISO 21920-3.
- Roughness limits (Ra):
- Metallic and ceramic femoral and tibial articulating surfaces: Ra ≤ 0.1 µm (cut-off 0.25 mm).
- Plastics (tibial and patella) articulating surfaces: Ra ≤ 2 µm (cut-off 0.8 mm).
- Measurement locations and frequency:
- Femoral condyles: measurements at contact locations for 0°, 30°, 60° flexion (uni-, bi-, tri-compartmental systems); patellar flange measured at three evenly distributed points where applicable.
- Metallic/ceramic tibial components (mobile bearing): six evenly distributed locations for bi/tri systems; three for uni-compartmental.
- Plastics tibial components: measure medial and lateral sides (six or three locations depending on compartmentalization); for mobile bearings measure both superior and inferior surfaces; posts measured where present.
- Measurement details to report: stylus tip radius and precise measurement positions on the specimen. Measurement direction for plastics should be approximately perpendicular to machining marks.
- Visual acceptance: Surfaces must be free from embedded particles, raised edges, scratches and score marks (plastic components may show finishing-process marks).
Applications and who uses it
ISO 7207-2:2025 is used by:
- Orthopaedic implant design engineers and materials scientists setting surface specifications.
- Manufacturers and production engineers for process validation, in-process control and final acceptance.
- Quality assurance and metrology labs performing surface roughness testing and documentation.
- Regulatory affairs and compliance teams preparing technical files and demonstrating control of critical surface characteristics.
- Suppliers and contract manufacturers of femoral, tibial and patella components.
Practical uses include production validation, supplier qualification, change control, failure analysis and demonstration of consistency for regulatory submissions.
